Hotel for February

Wondering if anyone can help.

My partner and I are hoping to make our 2nd trip to New York in February (dates somewhere between 12th-20th) probably for 3-4 nights. We are looking for a hotel that is reasonably central but not in Times Square as that's to busy for us, we mastered the subway last time so happy to be using that to get around. We are looking at hopefully under £200 a night or $300, is that realistic for that time of year? Has anyone got any suggestions? We need a king size bed really due to my partners height and wifi would be good but otherwise not fussy.

Although having just looked at comparisons am I right in saying that a US queen size bed is pretty much the same as a UK king size?

Thanks in advance for your help

I don't know how a U.S. king bed compares to your country's queen, but it's the largest you can get here. When you book, make sure that the bed is "king," not "full," "double," or "queen."

February usually has great hotel rates, except perhaps for Valentine's Day, the 14th. I'd wait to book until winter unless you happen to find a bargain that you can't resist.

For areas, check out midtown west which is close enough to Times Sq., without being in the middle of the chaos. The upper west side is quite pleasant--lovely and residential in feeling. As long as you're close to a subway, you can be to midtown in ten minutes. The Beacon and the Milburn are suite hotels. (I've stayed at the Milburn and an recommend it.) I also love the Belleclaire.

A UK king bed is a US queen. A US king is massive.

I can understanding wanting a king. There will be a lot of hotels offering one.

Prices are usually a bit higher around President's Day weekend (which coincides with Valentine's Day) but even that weekend is quite affordable. Lots of good choices for ~$250 + tax or even lower, and more sale prices may hit closer to the date. Even if that turns out to be the most convenient weekend, you should do fine with your budget.

Kayak.com has a courtyard studio (King) at the Hyatt Union Square for $233 + tax with free cancellation. Or a Superior King at the Kitano for $199 on Booking.com Lots of other good choices too.

I'd suggest searching on Kayak.com, filtering by excellent rating and free cancellation then bringing up the map view. Then start reading TA reviews and looking at photos to come up with a list of the most appealing. The above suggestions are just examples that jumped out at me as nice choices.

Thanks. Happy with a US queen if that's the same as a UK king, that will increase our options in our budget. Will look up the hotels suggested. Unfortunately it may have to be over valentines day as it has to be during the UK school holiday but sounds like it should still be ok for budget.

Would most people suggest waiting till oct/nov time to book or booking now?

Reserve a cancelable rate and no worries. Watch rates as it gets closer, but at least you'll have something that you are comfortable with.

We always tell our out of town friends and family that we recommend the Hotel Giraffe at 365 Park Avenue South at 26th Street. It is a boutique-gem and in a great location that is within walking distance or a quick taxi ride to midtown and Times Square (to the north) and Gramercy Park, Union Square, the “Village” and SoHo (to the south), Chelsea and The Highline Park (to the west) and the Meat Packing District (to the southwest).

That said, the Giraffe is at the upper end of most budgets though there are frequent specials. For more information, see:

I like the Hampton Inn Times Square North for a central location that is not in the middle of Times Square. I like Midtown in February for that reason = central location. My second choice would be the UWS.
