I think your short trip on the ferry could be costly with an RV. You can check the current prices at ferryalaska.com. From Anchorage the only logical place to use the ferry is between Whittier and Valdez. How long is your total trip and will this fit into your plans? If you are not planning on being anywhere near Valdez anyway, this would be a major detour.

And if you had to forego something like visiting Denali in order to make time for the ferry, I would say it is a huge mistake. But at this point you haven't given enough information for us to give a good opinion.

We wanted a jaunt on the Marine Highway as well and used the ferry Chenega from Whittier to Valdez (stayed in Seward the night before). Unfortunately it was a very drizzly day so we didn't catch any great views; on the other hand, we were inside the ferry vs trying to enjoy ourselves outside so I thought it a fair trade. It cost us $361 for 2 adults and a 22' motorhome. You also need to be aware that this ferry only runs in that direction twice a week and build your itinerary around it.

We enjoyed Valdez quite a bit - spent the 4th of July there as a matter of fact.

Another option would be to drive to Homer and take the ferry over to Seldovia and back. You can camp with the RV on the spit and wouldn't need to take it on the ship. Can walk from the campground to the dock. Only would cost you $33.00 for each adult one way and they go over several times a week. They head over at 11:55am and get back to Homer at 10:30pm. Would make a nice day trip.

Good idea about Homer => Seldovia and back. I was planning on doing that until the ferry was 3 hours late the day I wanted to do it, meaning the ship was not planning on spending any time in Seldovia that day! They were going again two days later but I was leaving.

But ferry delays can happen on any route so don't let that stop you!
