thinking about taking a train to Springfield....we would like to visit the museum and whatever else there is.... If we come in for a weekend...is there enough to do without a car? Are taxi's available? What area would be the best to stay in?

Train station is right downtown with the Hilton, State House Inn, and Abraham Lincoln Hotel all less than 4 blocks away. Plenty to do & see downtown, even quite a few bars ranging from semi-seedy to martini-bar. Quaint shops, variety of food. Lincoln sites within a few blocks.

There now is evening bus service..but limited.

Stayed here 3 weeks ago having got train up from St Louis. Taxis very cheap and never too long to wait for one.

Lincoln museum superb, would also recommend Gas Station Museum on Route 66, just north of downtown, really unique.Plus the Illinois State Police Museum which is only open on Thursdays + Saturdays but worth an Hour Stop close by.

Worldtravelnut:Thank you for a tantalizingly brief trip report. We are going in June and I am excited to go to the museum. How long did you take to go through the Lincoln museum? Did you have any really great meals in the area?
