Is Morrsitown near NYC and if so, is there a convenient way to get there? Also is there any shopping nearby?
Use Yahoomaps if you are unsure about a town's location.
Morristown is about 40 minutes by car from Manhattan.
NJ Transit has train station in Morristown. There is also bus service especially on workdays.
26 miles as the crow flies, 31 miles/35 minutes by car on the extremely rare occasion there are no traffic delays (especially at the tunnels).
New Jersey Transit train is your best headache-free option ($9.50, a little over an hour to NY Penn Station).
Not sure what sort of shopping you're looking for. In addition to several area malls, Morristown has plenty of nice, locally-owned shops downtown.
by the way, the fare that Tubman gave is one-way
adult off-peak roundtrip is $16/person
off-peak is basically anytime that is not rush hour
If you have a car, there's a large upscale shopping center in Short Hills, Just take NJ Route 24 east from Morristown to Kennedy Parkway and you will be at the Short Hills Mall. it's about 20 minutes from Morristown. You'll find Macy's, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Neiman-Marcus, etc. there, along with a very silly glass-walled elevator in a two-story mall!
There's also the Livingston Mall on South Orange Avenue in Livingston, about the same distance from Morristown. The stores there are not as fancy as the Short Hills Mall. Macy's, Lord & Taylor, and Sears are the anchor stores.
You'd really need a car to get to either of these malls.
As for the train to New York, check the schedule. Some trains go to Hoboken, others have much more convenient direct service to New York City. The trains stop at the Broad Street Station in Newark, which is not the main downtown Newark train station, so don't even think of transferring to another train line in Newark, since the major lines stop at Newark's Penn Station. Simplest way to New York City is to take the direct train to New York's Penn Station.
googlemaps, mapquest, etc. for distance.
I honestly think the train straight into New York is the best option. No traffic, and you don't have to switch trains at Summit or Broad Street Newark(unless you get own the Hoboken train). Shopping malls include Rockaway, Short Hills, Willowbrook and Livingston. You can actually take buses to all of these malls.
