My husband and I will be in San Antonio in June. We are staying on the Riverwalk, but we are looking for some fun outside of the city as well. Preferably within an hour driving distance, we'd love to do some kayaking and/or horseback riding. Anybody have any recommendations? Or any other fun things to do there besides the Riverwalk?

Not much whitewater, but you can kayak on the Guadalupe and Comal Rivers. They are much more suited to toobing and I highly recommend it. We have several great caves that offer a variety of tours, including spelunking. Enchanted Rock State Park is another great place to visit.

Here are the links to Inside San Antonio articles about some of these things.

ps - are you from SC?

Octoboy:

You mention Enchanted Rock. I have looked it up but have a couple of questions.

How far is the drive from SAT? Also, once you arrive, how far is the hike to see it and is it a strenuous trek?

It is on my list of things to do but I am concerned with the heat/humidity factor.

Octoboy - Thanks for the links, that will be perfect! :)

Yes, sort of from SC. Went to USC, hence the nickname. :)

Its about an hour and a half to Fredericksburg - 70 miles from SA go to Comfort take US87 north about 20 miles There's lots of shopping, several good restaurants, then another half hour to Enchanted Rock. It's a strenuous but relatively short hike to the top - well worth the effort.

The heat and humidity will knock your socks off. I grew up in the California desert, lived in DC -- and am still not used to Texas heat.

This is why drinking margaritas and tubing (with your cooler full of beer) are such popular activities this time of year. Visting a cavern is another cool idea.

I wouldn't hike Enchanted Rock in the summer because there is no shade there. It is otherwise an easy hike.

One good note: it has been an unseasonably cool spring. Maybe this will hold for June.

I graduated from Winthrop (many years ago) - had lots of friends from USC and Clemson.

Octoboy's description of the Enchanted Rock hike is more accurate than mine. It really isn't a big deal, though, if you are in good shape and are used to hiking.

(It ain't nothing like hiking around Yosemite...)
