We are staying on the Riverwalk for 3 nights, me, my husband and another couple. Im curious if we need to rent a car or is there plenty to do to fill our time near the riverwalk? or public transportion to get us around?

For the Steve's Homestead website try this http://www.saconservation.org/
It's interesting!!!!!!
I'll agree with the others -- for such a short stay, there's no need to bother with a car.
Even if you want to venture a bit further out of the downtown area, you can take the Sightseer Special (Bus 7). A $3.75 all-day pass lets you travel to many of SA's sites.
The bus runs daily between these stops: River Walk Streetcar Station, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Alamo, San Antonio Museum of Art, Japanese Tea Garden, Brackenridge Park , San Antonio Zoo, Trinity University, University of the Incarnate Word, Witte Museum, and San Antonio Botanical Garden. Passes are available from the San Antonio Visitor Information Center, located between the Alamo and River Walk.
There are professionally guided tours to other attractions like the other Spanish missions, plus a "ghost" tour that is often mentioned in the forum.
