I would like to rent a car in August while in Calabria. Could someone please recommend a car rental company that is comparable to Avis or Hertz.
Hello Giovanna. Let me try to answer your inquiry. If you plan to pick up your car at LAmezia Airport (SUF) go to www.sacal.it and press the "AUTONOLEGGIO" icon. There, in addition to AVIS & Hertz you will find the name & phone number of another 6 car rental companies. Budget, Europcar & Maggiore are reliable companies. For the Reggio Calabria Airport (REG) , go to www.aeroportodellostretto .it/autonoleggi.asp and again you will find Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Maggiore and another 5 auto rental companies. At the Crotone-Santa Anna Airport (CRV), you will find only Avis & Europcar. (www.aeroporto.kr.it). Usually you get the best price when you reserve your car from your home country, preferably from a local office, and NOT in Italy. Hope this will help. Let me know if I can be of further service. JP
Thank you JP! I appreciate your feedback.
JP do you have an opinion (good or bad) about SIXT car rental? I am currently holding a rez with them but have no problem changing to another company. Also .... are any of the companies on sacal.it site located right in the terminal? We are arriving Lamezia airport.
Would rather not have to take a shuttle to car.
Hello again! I have no opinion about SIXT because I don't know anyone who has used this car rental company. ALL of the car rental offices were moved out of the the Arrivals Terminal and moved to offices located about 100 meters away. You walk the short distance to the office of your car rental company, check in, and they will bring your chosen vehicle from their storage lot to you. Remember to take note of the location of the closest Gasoline Service Station to the airport, so that you can refuel just before returning the rented vehicle. Again, let me know if I can be of further assistance. JP
Thank you JP! It's all the litle things we need to know that are important! I've been to Italy a million times but have never rented a car. I appreciate your knowledgable feedback and will be in touch if I have any other questions.
Thanks and have a great day!
I have used Hertz at Lamezia and they seem to be th echeapest at present.
Make sure you have an IDP (from AAA). The rental company may not ask to see it but it is required in Italy along with your state license. If you get stopped for any reason by the police you will have to show it or be fined.
Have you looked at prices from http://www.auto-europe.co.uk/ ? They are usually better from the UK site than the US site and you can book a no excess rate (no deductible).
Thank you but Whats an IDP???
An IDP is an International Driving Permit which is a translation of your driver's license. It is available at AAA offices for about $20 including a passport size photo, cheaper if you bring your own photo.
Here is a comprehensive article on it:
