Adults in Saariselka
Save

Hello I'm looking to go to Lapland around the 17th December with my husband for 3 or 5 nights.

We're hoping to see the Northern Lights while we are there which is why we've chosen Saariselka (although I know that there is by no means any guarantee).

I just wondered whether there will be enough for us to do if we stay for the 5 nights and whether or not it is normal for adults to do all the kids' stuff (i.e. visit santa etc).

Also can anyone recommend a tour operator which offers reasonably priced excursions or can they be arranged once we arrive? I quite fancy the idea of toboganning, husky/reindeer rides and watching a film outdoors at night.

Any help will be much appreciated - I feel like I'm just getting more and more confused looking at all the different travel websites!

I am going around the same time as you. I was also wondering if I should book excursions through Inghams or will it be cheaper to book them in Saariselka. Please help somebody as I would like to know before I go,

Inghams excursions are usually cheaper than booking with the local safari companies and you get transport included to those that are outside Saariselka, however do check what you are getting for the price from each company, check out Top Safaris, Husky & Co websites, there are others whose names escape me, look for them on Saariselka's tourist information site

I've been to Saariselka with friends (all of us are late 30's) and we found that there was plenty to do. We booked a 7 night package through Inghams and stayed in a log cabin. While we were there, we choose the learn to cross country package that gave us instruction for 3 mornings and hire of the equipment for the total duration, so that took up most mornings. We went out with the husky dogs, which is well worth doing, and we went on a reindeer trip too, which was pleasant. We took skidoos up the fell one evening to see if we could see the northern lights (no joy for us!) These we'd prebooked with inghams before we left as I'd looked online prior and found the prices where comparative with booking locally.

We also messed about on the tobogan run, (free) if you buy ski lift passes you can go from the top, but we choose to walk up the side of the run, and then when we were to tired, we'd fling ourselves back to the bottom! most of the things we did where in the afternoons. There's some lovely little cafes around Saariselkas' centre to get hot drinks in after spending all morning outside. We also paid to use the pool and slides in the Holiday Club Hotel and Spa, which was great to warm up in. On one of the days we took a very long cross country ski over to another hotel,

http://www.suomenlatu.fi/kiilopaa/en/smoke-sauna/

where they had a traditional smoke sauna, which was an experience well worth doing.....

we wanted to try ice driving/karting, here:

http://actionpark.fi/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=51&Itemid=28&lang=en

but we ran out of time...

so personnally, I'd say there's loads to do during the day, and it doesn't matter what age you are, do them! In the evening we entertainied ourselves with cooking, board games, films, building fires, jumping around in the snow after being in the sauna, and making ice glasses for vodka, (this didn't work too well)!

So I'd say pre-book the things you'd definetly like to do huskys/reindeer/skidoos/ski-ng through a company like Inghams. We found their prices to be reasonable, but anything out of the ordinary like smoke saunas/ice driving/watching films outdoors, arrange these for yourself prior to going, or at least know where to ask once you arrive...hope this helps!

good advice above, we have done all those things at different times on different trips. The snow shoeing is also good, hired from Top safaris and they took us on a guided walk through the woods, beautiful scenery and much more remote than we would have dared to go onour own. The hire charge meant we could keep them for three days so went out around the village in the deep snow off the paths in them in the evenings, great fun.

The ice karting is the all time favourite activity for all menbers of my family, not cheap but a great experience. We also did a snowmobil pulled sledge taxi run from Top Safaris to the top of the fell where there is a nice cafe and gift shop. Top safaris give you sledges to take up so you come back down the toboggan run. Just keep a hold of your sledges at the top otherwise others may use them!

Thank you so much for all of the advice. It sounds we'll be struggling to pack it all in. I'm booking now!

Unfortunately Inghams don't seem to have any availability left for online booking so I'm going nip to the travel agents now. If there's no availably then I'll book with Thomson's. They offer some of the key activities and It sounds as though I'll be able to book activities when I arrive if worst comes to worst.

Thanks again!
