has anyone done the trip to the ice hotel and if so how much did it cost? i have heard that you go by snowmobile to the ice hotel so would i need to do that on a seperate excursion or not? thanks

You can compare the prices at

http://www.levi.fi/en/experiences/winter-activities/weekly-programme-for-winter.html ,

http://www.levi.fi/en/experiences/programme-providers.html

and

http://www.inghams.co.uk/ski-holidays/resorts/activities/item476/levi/

In your comparisons pay attention also to the length of the activities and what "extras" they include (lunches, coffee/tea etc.).

Simple rule of thumb. One more middle man tends to increase the cost.

As Inghams or any other operator is not doing charity, they will add their own margin on top of the cost that the local company charges. In Levi you will find plenty of options with better price/performance. There will be huskies and skiidoos for everyone.

I have to disagree about inghams as when we were in levi - they were cheaper than the local places and that's why we used them - I think now though the prices are simular (going with inghams or locally)

It doesn't work that way Polarbear.

Inghams and other operators receive a commission from the activity provider - essentially for advertising services.

Hence, tour operators add their margin to a net price rather than the gross published price from the supplier.

Hence, you should shop around with both your operator and the local suppliers for the best prices.

We booked 2 excursions through Inghams and 4 through the tourist office. The prices and what was included was comparable. But the huge disadvantage with Inghams was that they wouldn't say which day your trip would be on until you got there. And inevitably there was a clash which I resolved by upgrading to a longer husky ride on a different day (at more cost). To guarantee seeing Santa on xmas day we had to book this through the tourist office. I do rate Inghams highly but I wanted all my excursions prebooked to avoid disappointment, and ideally 1 each day.

There is more than one ice hotel - the most famous being just over the border in Sweden, though they don't build it until after xmas. The tourist office trip to Lainio Snow Village is in fact an ice hotel and you have a hot lunch in the ice restaurant followed by free time to wander round the rooms in the hotel.

If you are in any other towns while you are there, its worth checking their prices. Prices in Levi/Yllas etc really are tourist prices.

Places like Kemi charge half the price for the same product, luckily we spend time in Kemi and do the reindeer/husky rides etc when there.

Please can anyone help me regarding Lapland excursions!!

I really want to get it right but feel so confused, we are departing to Lapland Dec 18th 2011 (3 nights) we are a family of 5 so it's difficult enough being 5!!.

I have booked with First choice their excursions are very pricey, I fancy the Reindeer Safari & Snow mobiles both add up to £930 with First Choice.

Is it possible to book through other agents? Are they cheaper in resort?

Please help!!!!!

In the resort you can ask the excursions also from different tour operators (however, they give priority to their own customers, naturally), or pay a visit to the tourist office. You can find the costs of the excursions booked via the tourist office on the net in the resort's website.
