The Gran Melia Hotel is absolutely beautiful. We visited El Yunque tropical rainforest and bathed in the waterfall. It was excellent. The hotel in itself is well manicured and the staff very friendly. The rooms were very nice and spacious, although the tub in the bathroom was a bit below standard. There were also some minor details that were not completely cleaned; very good overall.

The pool is magnificent. The beach is pretty much unusable. We went to Luquillo beach 10 minutes away and had a great time.

The food in the hotel is EXPENSIVE and just average. Rent a car and right on the main road there are many local and american restaurant chains. You will save about $700 during the week with 3 people dining.

The casino is small and not really great. It's just there.

The beds are comfortable and the area very SAFE. It was very relaxing. I will recommend this as the best hotel in Puerto Rico based on the five that I have stayed in prior trips.

“Great trip - better than expected”

Gran Melia Puerto Rico

Just returned from the hotel. Much better than expected after reading some negative reviews before I booked. Resort was not busy at all and we felt as if we were on our own private island. Accommodation was clean, very comfortable and upscale, and much better quaility than my recent trip to the DR. Sol Melia does a good job with the ambiance and general chic decoration of all public areas and rooms. Hotel is no longer all inclusive, BUT, we had the breakfast buffet and never eat lunch. Food was excellent in the restaurants. There is a walk from some of the further villa units, but there are golf carts that will whizz you around. We booked online and were given a promo code to use that took $200 off the value of the vacation. Some type of sale. They say it has never been cheaper to go to Puerto Rico and this 4 star hotel. We had a great time.

I stayed at the Gran Melia May 2nd - 6th. A friend and I went to enjoy a relaxing few days for his birthday. First, I must say that everyone must view each person's comments as relative. As it is relative to how many other places and experiences you can compare this to. Also, you CANNOT compare some place else to your own home comfort, especially when you are visiting another culture or country. Each culture and country are very diffrent especially when it comes to food. I would only agree with one thing and that is that service should be at high standards no matter where you go. Remember, your ATTUTUDE can predict what type of service you receive. We did not have a problem with service.

All if this to say, The Gran Melia was a nice resort, however, it is a little distant from some things you may want to do, (so rent a car - cheaper from the airport). The rooms were a little musty, however I always take scented candles everywhere I travel as you just never know and I have had a smokers room. The people were very nice. As with any place, you can have a "hit or miss" with service, but we did not experience and "bad service". Now, I will agree with one thing, the food was pretty bad. However , we rented a car and was able to get out and about , which we enjoyed a lot. We did enjoy the habachi restaurant, but we knew what to expect there. No it was not sauce on everything, but if you are looking for healthy eating this is not the place. Try this type of restaurant in your home town to see if this is something you like. I cannot say that this place was anymore expensive than any other resort /place I have visited, St. Lucia, Grand Cayman, Bahamas, hell, Miami to name a few. Again, that is relative to what you feel is expensive. To some, $2.50 for a hamburger is expensive; yes it is if you are only are use to eating on the dollar menu. Yes, it was not a beach resort, however some places in Hawaii is the same way.

Lastly, we left our I-pod there. I called and they had it and sent it to me. They made an effort to get it to me quickly.

I would stay again.

“Extremely disappointing experience”

Gran Melia Puerto Rico

Perhaps the most disappointing vacation our family has ever taken- The inefficiency, incredibly poor service, mold in the room, faulty equipment and failure to respond to these problems made this experience extremely disheartening- Add in the healty cost of the staying at the resort and the anxiety and disappointment becomes almost Biblical in its scope- Would not return to this property if the trip were free-!!!

“Loved it...”

Gran Melia Puerto Rico

6 May 2008

We stayed at the Grand Melia from April 23rd until the 1st of May. After reading reviews on this site I too was a little hesitant about what our experience would be like, but after arriving my concerns vanished. Not to discredit previous reviews, but I find it odd that not once did I hear anything about “bed bugs” during our stay from the 30 other guests that were staying here. When you visit a tropical island there are mosquitoes and bugs that come out, especially after rain. Some people may confuse these bites as “bed bugs.”

Anyways, from the moment we arrived everyone treated us with a warm smile. There was one minor incident where we needed something brought to our room. I was told that it would be there in 5 minutes, and after waiting a little longer than that I decided to call the front desk again. They quickly apologized and immediately sent the item over to our room. Other than this, everything was perfect. The employees quickly remembered our names and greeted us every time they saw us. It was a very relaxing stay.

I would also like to add that after reading reviews on here, I don’t understand why people continue to complain about taxi rides into town or to the airport. If you plan on venturing out of the hotel, like we did, save your self some time and money and rent a car. Thrifty offers medium cars at $25 a day. We enjoyed driving to Luquillo everyday, to enjoy the fresh coconuts with a couple of empanadas. The beauty of this hotel is that it is away from the city, but still accessible with a car or taxi ride….

I will defiantly return to the Gran Melia in the future!
