We stayed in this wonderful old hotel on a 2-night KGB deal. The staircase, panelling and banisters are all original and the views are lovely. Apparently it has a ghost - but we didnt see one. Our room looked out over the countyside and was perfectly adequate for the length of our stay. The bed was enormous and very comfortable but we both felt the en suite bathroom was cramped - you could hardly turn round in the shower it was such a tight squeeze. Our room did not have a bath but they have a room with a bath along the corridor which you can ask to use.
On arrival we were asked if we wanted fresh milk for the room - which we did - but unfortunately coffee had not been provided, only tea. Also - a welcome addition in the Lake District is their "dry room" where you can store wet clothing after a day in the inevitable rain.
The dining experience was lovely: you order your drink from the small bar and take it through to the beautful old lounge, where you are served petit fours while perusing the menu. Once your meal is ready you are invited through to the dining area - where service is prompt and efficient. If there were to be any criticism of this part of our stay it would have to be the portion sizes - a bit on the scrimping side. However our lamb was cooked to perfection and the complimentary bottle of wine very quaffable.
We would definitely go back.
