We had already booked the Bon Repos before I read the reviews on trip advisor, and I have to say - I was more than a bit concerned about what the hotel was going to be like. However we decided just to make the best of whatever it was like and there was always the option of eating out, rather than using the hotel restaurant if it was all that bad.
The journey to the hotel is very long, on a coach followed by a short boat trip. The hotel is very outdated, particularly in the reception areas. We were staying in the Jasmin block where the room was small but adequate, with a shower room and a balcony. There is a fridge in the room which is big enough to keep snacks and drinks in and a tv. There is also a safety deposit box which is free which we used throughout our stay. You could not fault the cleaners, they come in every day and do a great job, changing towels and making the bed and keeping the rooms nice and clean. There is no airconditioning in the hotel but during our stay, we left the doors open at night which kept the room cool and we didn't need to rent a fan. This may be different in the height of the season when the evenings are not as cool.
The food in the restaurant at the Bon Repos is very basis. Breakfast is ok, there is choice of bread, hams, cheese or cereals and fruit if you are like me and cant stomach much in the morning. There are lots of wasps in the outside eating area of the restaurant during the morning, so you are best to sit inside if you don't like them swarming round you while you eat. We are both non smokers and were happy that the dining area appears to be kept no smoking unlike other places we have stayed at in the past.
The evening meal is very basic and we only ate in the hotel restaurant for the first evening as it was not really our cup of tea! You get little choice, it is very repetative and we disliked the fact that we weren't even offered any drinks during our meal. It is like a school cantine, with the meals to match!
The restaurants in the main town are lovely, so it would be a real shame to miss out by eating in the hotel all the time. It is a 30 min walk there or a short taxi boat ride. We tended to walk both ways as we enjoyed the exercise, and it is well lit so there is no problem with walking back late at night. There are some lovely pizza places in the town as well as restaurants serving more traditional foods. WIne and beer is both very cheap and the icecream selections are amazing! You can get an icecream cornet with what ever flavour you can imagine for just 50p.
In my opinion, both the town and the views around the hotel are beautiful. It is a lovely unspoilt area. The swimming is lovely, the water is very clear and is great for snorkelling and spotting fish. There is plenty to do, such as taking the ferry over to the island, Orebic or hiring bikes which we did during one day. I would definitely advise that you go to the welcome meeting as there is lots of interesting information even if you arn't planning on going on any organised trips - there is lots you can explore on your own.
