Wife and I stayed four nights including a weekend, using the hotel as a base to explore. Booked through Marriott at a reasonable rate (£89 for first night, £129 a night subsequently) - room only. Congenial, helpful staff at reception and in the restaurant and pleasant, sizeable room with Marriott soft beds (too soft for our ancient backs as it turned out). Very efficient check-in and check-out.
Our only compliant concerns the food in the main dining room on Saturday night. The long wait between courses might have been expected since the hotel was hosting a wedding. An apologetic manager gave us complementary coffee. Less excusable was the unimaginative fix-priced starters and the dessicated chicken main course. Another table sent their chicken dish back; we suffered in silence, being too exhausted from the car journey to complain. We vowed not to eat again in the restaurant.
We chose an out-of-town location to avoid parking problems. This worked very well for side trips to Saltaire and The Quays in Manchester. We used the park and (tram) ride system near Eccles on another occasion; this worked well once we found the car park location.
Our best meal by far was at Puccinis at Swinton; excellent food and friendly, fast service - ten minutes drive from the hotel. (We had considered the Milan restaurant in Worsley until we read the damning reviews.) The Terrace restaurant at the Lowry was also pleasant and good value.
We are glad we visited Manchester and enjoyed the Quays and strolling the streets.. However, as a city it lacks (or we failed to find) great architectural sights. Although we are told by friends that Manchester works very well as a city, as tourists we preferred Liverpool, despite the extensive building works in its supposed year of culture.
We would stay at the hotel again but avoid its restaurant.
