“Good weekend if a little wet!”

Twitchen Farm

My partner and 2 year old son stayed at Twitchen Farm over a very wet weekend in March this year.

We have stayed at a B&B in the area the previous August so had something to compare it to. Its a lovely farmhouse in a great location but was lacking in atmosphere. Perhaps it was because there were only a couple of other guests there at the time. Most of the time we felt we were the only ones there.

Whereas the other farm actively encouraged guests to join them and collect eggs, see the new borns etc,. we had to actually ask the owners if we could see the farm animals which turned out to be a couple of horses and a dog. When you have a 2 year old who loves animals, this was a bit of a disappointment!

On the plus side, the food is fantastic. We ate one night at the Black Venus pub down the road, and other night at the farmhouse, and the farmhouse won hands down. Massive portions, good value and wonderfully cooked.

As there are so many B&Bs in the area, it is doubtful that we would return, but don't let this put you off, it is a lovely place and perfect for some country air and good food.

We have stayed at Twitchen farm a few times over the last few years, and each year it gets better and better. The location is fantastic, with beautiful views from the farm. You can walk to the local pub at the bottom of the drive and it is convenient for Exmoor site seeing.

The breakfasts are great. Food is mainly sourced locally and much is organic. Our daughter is vegeterian and veggie sausages were a big hit for breakfast together with hot chocolate.

In the evening, you can opt to eat in. We would recommend this for at least one night of your stay. The food is yummy with plenty of it. We had fish pie one night and roast chicken the other together with starters and a cooked pudding.

The rooms are clean and comfortable. The accommodation is in converted farm buildings and retains lots of the character of the old building. Rooms are traditionally furnished and all of them are different - this isn't a big chain of 'clone' rooms.

The hospitality is great. Jaye and Helen are extremely helpful and have maps and guides to help you plan your stay. There are dogs and chickens wandering about and lots of sheep in fields. You can bring your own horsre (we did) and exploor the countryside on horseback. Bicylcles are also a good idea.

This is an ideal base to exploor Exmoor or for a seaside holiday in Devon. We will definitely be coming back very soon.

“A Superb Place to Stay!”

Twitchen Farm

25 Mar 2008

We have been visiting Helen and Jaye at Twitchen for years. It's superb. Beautiful location, fantastic food, great welcome and superb rooms. A real escape.

Lots of their own land to walk on (they supply a map plus info on what’s around), a superb pub (that does great food to) down the road and the enthusiasm of them both to Exmoor and ensuring their guests simply have a great time.

And they enthusiastically take dogs!

I have used it on business to when in the area and found the wireless internet (free I might add!) really useful.

100% recommend it.

“Fab find - Great little B+B but with your own front door.”

Twitchen Farm

18 Sep 2007

I was a bit apprehensive about staying in a B+B as I find them quite intimate and normally prefer the anonymity a bigger hotel gives you.

However we were on a budget and hubby found Twitchen Farm (we booked directly with the B+B for £60 a night for the 2 of us). It was fab. Clean, well presented. The 2 sisters who own it are very friendly and helpful.

The rooms are in converted barns so we had a key to our own front door which really appealed to me.

We ate at the Black Venus in the village that evening and it was lovely. Great home cooked food at a good price too. Not sure I would of fancied the walk back to the B+B but we had taken the car down so didn't have to brave it.
We did notice some people were having a BBQ in the gardens when we left - which would be a lovely way to spend an evening.

Breakfast in the morning was great and they even had veggie sausages on offer. It was lovely to sit at the window and see robins and partidges ( I think!!!) in the front gardens.

They also have a little shop - so you could buy a bottle of wine and sit and enjoy the local wildlife and views whilst sipping on a glass of wine - sounds perfect.

Great little find - I can't believe they only charge £60 a night.

“Very Exmoor”

We stayed here in a very wet early July. The farm itself is just outside Challacombe about 20 minutes from Barnstaple and approached up a steep private drive. You have marvellous views of Exmoor from the top and it is very quite and peaceful.

The farm itself has some lovely nature walks and although not a fully working farm as you would expect still is a lovely place to stay if you want to be awoken by the cockrell and see the horses and maybe a sheep or two. We were on a B&B basis and the breakfast is excellent with both continental AND a great cooked option - you wont be disappointed.

The village itself has a little shop and a lovely pub - the Black Venus that does great food - it even has a little beer garden for those summer days (of which we didnt have any).
