My husband and I are big fans of wines from the Ribera Del Duero wine region. we were excited to spend 2 days exploring the region and I did extensive hotel research and was excited about my stay at Convento Las Claras. it is situated in a small, unexciting town in glorious wine country. the hotel itself is very nice and clean. the restaurant, however, was very expensive and not particularly good. (although, again, the wine was fabulous) we ended up packing a picnic for our room for dinner the next night after a fabulous lunch of roasted lamb shank at Mauro in Penafiel, walking distance from the hotel.
after checking in, i went down to reception to see if they could recommend vinyards to visit. it was around noon and they seemed unsure that there might be a single vinyard that would be able to fit us in! there was one visit at 5pm, they said, but they werent sure if that vinyard could fit us. "What about other vinyards?" i asked. "mmmmm, not sure" they answered. it seemed to me like they were still figuring out how to work this whole "hospitality" business.
They did arrange for us to have a visit the next day at 1130am at Protos Bodega, however, when I attempted to make a reservation at the spa, they said it was impossible because none of the staff were there.
we did join on the 5pm tour but not because they made the reservation for us, but because the winery was very accommodating.
all in all, it is a lovely building but it is an area of the country and of tourism that requires some helpfullness from the staff that simply wasnt there.
