Reception, pool and gardens immaculate on arrival. Room adequate and spacious but dull and basic. Rooms have not been designed and maintained to the same standard as the public areas. When we were there for four night there was only one other couple staying for 2 nights during that period. Is the hotel a failing business or suffering from the economic downturn? The pool was great on arrival, but we couldn't swim to to a fly's graveyard flooating on top for the nex 2 days, it improved slightly after mentioning to the staff, but still too many insects for our liking. The staff were very friendly but breakfast service is def on Carribean time! We took a pack of cards with us to pass the time eventually. We ate at the Toucan and Kariwak which both looked nice, served good food and had people around. At the Mermaid we arrived back at the late hour of 9.30pm to find reception in darkness and locked. We entered through the restaurant to fingd the staff in a bit of a commotion wondering what to do with our room key as we were still out and they planned to go home. There was a security guard overnight. The following evening we were advised to take our keywith us, and enter the propetrty by the side entrance. Either side of the property is privaely owned ground which is not very attractive. If you want a decent view, ak for room 10 or 20, which will be a pool view. Bit of a shame as it looks lovely and could have potential. 10 minute walk to Crown point beach but 30 to pigeon point beach area. Our favourite is the Beach tucked behind 'Bago's bar. It is quiet - beautiful sand, minimal hassle from touts for boat trips, good tropical fish around rock of adjacent co co reef hotel for goggles or snorkle and 'Bagos is really friendly, nice for lunch and a sundowner cocktail.
