First I will say that I always give fair, balanced reviews. And I believe in leaving an excellent review where warranted. Not today.
I'm a regular traveller around the UK with my business and many times people have told me to try the Crab and Lobster if I'm ever on the Isle Of Wight. The name Crab and Lobster implies decent seafood, or so they would like us to believe.....
Today we went to the Isle and used the opportunity to try the Crab and Lobster. Well, I can tell you I've had better seafood for less money at an inner city restaurant (Westfield, London) and at the Crab and Lobster I left hugely disappointed and, frankly, robbed.
I wanted Lobster and my friend wanted crab. They had Lobster but, surprisingly, no whole crab (?!) We compromised and ordered the hot seafood platter for two at £58 as we were told it had hot crab meat. A considerable sum. A whole Lobster, crab meat, small prawns, larger shelled prawns, scallops, calamari and mussels in sauce. With chips and garlic bread.
The lobster was the highlight, but very small (I estimate 1lb). But tasty and enjoyable. The mussels were similarly nice but very small. The calamari was deep fried from frozen, Iceland could do better. The scallops average but tasteless. The small prawns were small in quantity. The larger shelled ones were either old or undercooked and uncleaned. Their digestive tracts were full of black gunk and were, frankly, inedible.
The Crab and Lobster does not serve whole crab. We were served what I can only describe as dark brown crab (ish) flavoured pate. Simply not acceptable for a 'Seafood' restaurant, and certainly not at these prices. Disgraceful. As with the prawns, it remained on the plate.
This pub (it's not a restaurant by any stretch of the imagination) does not deliver. The service was good but the food a disgrace. By chance, we got talking with the people on the adjacent table who's feelings were similar.
I get the feeling that this place is surviving in the short term on it's reputation. A reputation built on the work of the previous owners. One now crumbling at an alarming rate into the Bembridge coastline. I hope they can swim.
