Hospitality: Hosted by Klaus & Bettina Berens it is one of the best places I've ever stayed at. Others could take lessons from this place. You are greeted with a beverage of your choice on the house. This is hospitality. No questions, just what would you like to drink sir? Please have a seat on the veranda and I'll bring it to you. This is the way things should be everywhere.
Restaurant: It doesn't get any better than this. I come down to dinner and Klaus, the host, hands me a menu and apologies because it is only in German. I can find my way around a menu in German but here I don't know why they even print them. I've been here twice before and there is always a set menu. I'm not disappointed. Tonight it is leek and potato soup, a salad, baked salmon with tagliatelle in a butter sauce and chocolate mousse and cake for desert. Best meal I've had so far. Even better than the octopus in Venice. Egon Ronay, eat your heart out. I'm not a big soup eater but it is delicious. The salmon is cooked perfectly and I can feel my arteries harden perceptibly from the sauce. Between this and the breakfasts I've had, when I get home, I think my GP is going to send me to a clinic to process my blood to see how many pats of butter can be recovered.
Now I'm actually not a big desert or sweets eater but if I'm in the mood, chocolate will usually be my selection. The chocolate mousse is exquisite. If you are a chocoholic, this is the desert to die for. There are now three deserts that stand out in my memory. One was a chocolate mousse in Lille, France about 15 years ago, one was chocolate ice cream in Melbourne, Australia in 2006 and now this, and it’s leading the pack. Now I normally tend to gobble my food and would probably dispatch something like this in a few minutes. I try to make this last as long as possible. It comes with a bit of chocolate cake which is nice but is gone in a couple of minutes. I think I made the mousse last at least at least 20 minutes if not longer. Only enough on each spooning to just put a coating on my tongue. The chocolate taste is so intense it is almost tart. I could almost pick up the plate and lick it clean but don't want to create a spectacle in Klaus & Bettina's restaurant. This place is too good. What I don't understand is how Klaus keeps such a trim figure around all this food. He must run his backside off. Must come back and spend some time here. Always seem to be been passing through.
If it is high season you had better book. Value? It doesn't get any better than this. Not cheap but as good as it gets.
Very popular with motorcyclists as there is a big garage for parking motorcycles.
