travelled to north Yorkshire for the Christmas markets in York , and to visit the shopping outlets close by , to be honest , wanted to stay in or around York but the time of year prevented this , so looked a little further afield , and came across this gem .
both of us hadn’t been to this neck of the woods before so took a gamble and please we did .
arrived latish sat night having been frozen and then trampled by the large shopping crowds in York .
the greeting was very warm along with the lovely welcoming open fire in the hotel reception , we were quickly dispatched to our room to thaw out , unfortunately it was in the modern part , not the old castle , but we were presented with a lovely warn and spacious room which housed the largest bed I have ever slept in .
decided to eat in hotel due to the lateness of the hour , they accommodated us at the last minuet
and found us a table , live music was a welcome treat in the dining room to accompany the meal .
both ordered the lamb , as both of us are fans and can and do appreciate a well-cooked dish as we have been spoilt with our local farm shop and links to the farming stock in our home town
but the meal we had that night at the castle was (both agreed ) was the best we have ever had .
slept well in the biggest and comfy bed to rise for breakfast in the same restaurant as the evening meal , small but well appointed .
had the full Yorkshire breakfast which probably is the biggest breakfast in the world !!! but didn’t skimp on quality because to was large ( as can sometimes be the case ) .
very attentive staff , and genuinely pleasant , housed in a really lovely hotel , surrounded by some lovely scenery , including the village .
on our return journey , via York again !!! we were excitedly making plans to return to this gem .
can’t wait !
