My boyfriend and I feel indebted to the non-selfish New Forest B&B owner who was full and recommended Newton Farmhouse to us. It seems this warm, generous attitude is a thread which runs right through the heart of this area - and none more so than here. Even in the local pub - the King's Head at Whiteparish - David and Lizzie, were highly regarded as the owners of 'The' B&B - despite several other places spanning the route from the farmhouse to the pub. David and Lizzie have got it just right. They're on hand, in an unobtrusive way, morning and evening to take a genuine interest in what sort of day you've had and to give knowledgeable guidance and recommendations to help you plan each and every day if you want it. Mixing their local knowledge with our own plans really enabled us to get the most out of every minute of our 3 days in the New Forest area.
Our room was exceptionally comfortable and very homely rather than showy and clinical. Several times we imagined it being our own! We particularly loved the creaky, uneven floorboards and the history of the place. Extra personal touches like a pot of chocolates alongside the tea-tray and the vase of roses which appeared on the second day made it different and a bit special. A good, strong shower and thick, fluffy towels were an added bonus.
Lizzie's full English breakfast was consistently tasty with fresh fruit and market produce served on hot plates and immaculately presented. The family dogs joined us on occasions but Lizzie was very quick to say that they would be locked out of the room if we felt it inappropriate. For us and the other guests there at the time this was not a problem. It all added to the place feeling more like home. By the time breakfast was over, our room had already been serviced and 'supplies' replenished!
Newton's location on the A36 made navigation easy and the farmhouse readily accessible to many local - and not-so-local attractions. It's a really compact but variable area with something for everyone. We had 3 very different days and particularly recommend Lepe Loop ( a mix of coast and countryside) and Milford-on-Sea for moderate but relaxing exercise. Portsmouth Historic Docklands is a fabulous day out and, of course, walking anywhere in the forest itself is a real joy.
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this B&B to anyone wishing to stay in the New Forest. We'd love it to remain 'our secret hideaway' - but of course, that wouldn't be fair would it?
