“To be avoided at all costs”

San Clemente Palace Hotel & Resort

An echoing, soulless morgue with very variable levels of service.

We decided to stay here as we have two teenage children and we thought the gym and swimming pool would help them to balance the culture on the mainland, particularly as we were going at a time of the year when Venice is hot and overcrowded. I knew it was expensive , but no-where in Venice is cheap.
We stayed there for four nights and in that time I had to complain about a number of things but the main elements were; a filthy bath when we arrived, shower door falling off its hinges, dirty plates remaining uncleared from our room for two days ( I eventually left them outside in the corridor|),no hot water ( two phone calls and a trip to reception to sort this out), returning from Venice at 14.00 one day our rooms were untouched and the beds unmade,. There were other things but I think that this conveys the general sense of bad management. This is not a five star hotel by any stretch of the imagination.

In an effort to be fair I would have to say that the two attendants at the swimming pool were unfailingly charming and helpful.
If we go back to Venice again in the summer we will stay again at the Hotel des Bains on the Lido, where we stayed last time and which was delightful and worth the money.

“Perfect getaway from near-by Venice”

San Clemente Palace Hotel & Resort

We stayed here last summer for 4 nights. It is really a fantastic hotel. This was part of a 2 week trip to Italy that included stays at the Hotel de Russie in Rome and the Savoy in Florence, both really beautiful properties, and the San Clemente compared favorably with both and slightly less expensive.

Yes, it's a large hotel, but it is the only property on a private island, so even fully booked the hotel and grounds felt spacious and uncrowded. The building is ancient and gorgeous. The hallways are very wide and gracious, and the overall feeling is very luxurious. Our room (a deluxe) was very nice. The floors have enormous ceiling heights, so my guess is that even a regular room would feel spacious.

The pool area is terrific. The little 3-hole pitch-and-putt golf course seemed a little out of place, but again, the fact that there's space for such an amenity makes the whole palce seem large.

What is really exceptional about this place is how much of an antidote it is to the craziness and tourist crowds of Venice. We really enjoyed riding the launch from St. Marks to the hotel, which feels really serene after leaving the hordes.

I find I rarely agee with complaints I read about service in hotels, particularly those in the 5-star catergory. Maybe our needs are simpler than most people. Basically, there were staff people everywhere, a very accommodating concierege to make suggestions and reservations for restaurants, pleasant front desk people and wait staff, a great buffet breakfast.

Overall, a terrific experience.

We spent 2 nights in this hotel as our last stop on our honeymoon.. the Palace was AMAZING as it is an island with many facilities on deck! the shuttle boat to and from the city center was very useful but from the train station its a little tricky to catch if you didnt do the research (as you will still need to grab a taxi or walk for a good while until you get to the city center where the Palace shuttle awaits).. the room service was very nice and the rooms were quite spacious and modern.. the conceige desk could be a little more helpful but they can do the basic stuff.. the swimming pool was great and they have a spa on site which we didnt get the chance to try.. taxi boat to the airport took 95 euros which was ouch but the only convenient way to get to the airport in time!!!

will go there again for sure

We only stay at 4 1/2 and 5 star hotels. SC was great. 15 minute complimentary water taxi from the center of Venice which runs all day and night (every 20 minutes). Amazing rooms. Only problem was very poor service at the pool restaurant.

Have just come back from a long weekend in Venice staying at the San Clemente Palace. What a perfect treat absolutely fabulous, a welcome break from the hustle and bustle. Could not fault it.
