“Avoid this one”

Grasmere House Riverside Hotel

8 Jul 2008

I must first admit, it was our error for not pre-booking, which may have led us to getting one of the worst rooms. Where do I start:
1. Bed sheets were heavily stained, with dried paint (lots of it!)
on the undersheet.
2. Pillows smelt of BO
3. Television was very old, tiny and the remote control for pay on demand didn't work.
4. Curtains were stained;
5. Bathroom didn't match the room, and the mirror on the wall
was far too low (perhaps ok if you are 4ft tall!)

On a good note the staff were actually quite friendly, and the breakfast was passable. The view was actually the best thing about the hotel.

For £120.00 night I would have expected much better standards (We have stayed in places 1/3 of this price which far surpassed this hotel).

“Very tired”

Grasmere House Riverside Hotel

9 Jun 2008

We booked this hotel for a meeting to get us out of the office, only to find the meeting room we booked is the restaurant/breakfast room/conservatory which had been pre booked for another large party so we were put into a bedroom with ensuite bathroom to hold our meeting (bed was replaced with table). We wanted to have our lunch in the conservatory overlooking the river and the Cathedral but the lunch was delivered to the bedroom and there were too many people in the other party and we felt like intruders. We did eventually eat in the lounge on our knees. Finger buffet lunch was plentiful but the experience was a bit of a joke. The "bedroom" we were in was tired with old decor so I can understand previous comments. Location good with stunning views and lovely well maintained garden. In real need of an update though. I wouldn't choose to stay or eat there.

Arrived at the hotel late in the evening...The hotel was clean and inviting. Beds were very comfortable. Bathroom was really nice. The food was very nice for breakfast. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. I was not happy to have to carry several bags up several flights up the stais, but we survived. I would stay there again.

“Comfortable rooms, enthusiastic service”

Grasmere House Riverside Hotel

Spent New Year's Eve there with my wife and elderly father, and we were extremely well looked after. Although we caused a bit of a problem by opting out of the hotel's New Year's party in favour of a quiet meal in the restaurant, we received polite and attentive service both in the restaurant and elsewhere.

The rooms (we booked the premium ones) were spot on: very comfortable bed, a modern bathroom with a proper shower that puts plenty of water on to the user and none on to the bathroom floor, very quiet with a splendid view out over the river, the water meadows and the Cathedral.

The food, as other reviewers have noted, was OK, but not really gourmet. Very decent breakfast, though.

My husband and I have just returned from one night at this hotel. It was very tired looking and the staff not really that helpful and we were not greeted that well.
My Husband had booked the Romantic room, it did have really lovely views and the four poster bed was very grand. However the bathroom didnt seem to match the bedroom and was not that nice at all it really needed a face lift.
Breakfast was the worst breakfast we have ever eaten in a hotel, I don't eat a cooked breakfast so I always have a croissant which was so hard I could of broken a tooth !! so I ordered toast and about 5 slices were brought to me on a plate the size of a saucer. You eat breakfast in the conservatory which was in need of updating horrid yellow and blue table cloths which was dirty, covered in stains.
I am afraid i will not be returning, and would not recomened it.
