We'd heard good word of mouth recommendations about the parkdean site, Tummel Valley. We'd chosen a caravan which was of a similar model to what we've stayed in before. For a 4 nightstay in aprilcost £188 for 4 of us.
Many people had commented about the windy road. If you are like us and have a tendency to miss the turnoffs, we ended up on a single track road which went and down. We were expecting a 11 mile twisty road when we reached the Loch Rannoch/Pitlochry road sign. Turning left, we were right at Tummel Valley, with reception on the right of us. As we were an hour early, we headed to explore the bar and outdoors.
The bar is quite big but also doubles as the entertainment. So you can't just go for a quiet drink as there is usually something going on. Someone mentioned to me that the bar was tired looking, but it looked like it had recently been done up and was very bright and modern. We're not too into joining in but many were and the tots wow factor had some great talent. Just off the bar is the way to the pool and another area to eat in. There is an arcade with access from out front and access from the bar. The usual tickets are available to exchange for prizes. The good thing about the arcade is you don't have to go through it to reach everything else. The bar was pretty reasonable price wise but we didn't try the food as we'd brought our own. The shop has a variety of things including hot scotch pies and sausage rolls. Prices probably average with a corner shop depending on where you live. They had daily papers and fresh rolls as well as a wide variety of sweets.
The pool requires you to go to reception and exchange your passes for bands and you get 45-50 minutes swim time. There is a baby pool but it's very small and the pool itself was quite busy. There is a sauna in the changing rooms. Coin operated lockers for £1 are available. The crazy golf works the same way, exchange your passes for clubs and balls. The crazy golf is a bit tired, and looks like it has been downsized. A bit of an update wouldn't go astray. The playpark has a variety of things such as climbing frames and trim trails. Could have done with a bit of a challenge for our 12 year old who moaned everything was too small for her.
At 4pm you can collect your welcome pack and location map and key from reception. The actual caravans are on the opposite side to the reception across a busy thoroughfare. It's not as safe as some places we've been but as we have road aware children we didn't worry too much about them running ahead of us. The walk was quite straight forward and despite being up quite a hill wasn't too much of a challenge for someone like myself with mobility problems.
The caravan was clean and tidy. Bedding was fully provided but it was make the beds up yourself which can be a pain. Our caravan in their sycamore range had heating. The bedrooms were very warm but we found the fire in the lounge area was positioned in the wrong place and therefore made it difficult to warm the front part of the van, especially when we had snow. I'd definitely recommend a caravan with heating. Each caravan has their own spacious area with a picnic table which had it been the summer season probably would have been great. There was plenty space for 2 cars in our area. We were close to the duck pond. Thought the ducks have a habit of wandering, as we never saw them in the pond, they were constantly walking around.
There were communal bins in various area's of the park. They were only emptied once during our stay and were over flowing constantly. A more regular collection of the bins would be the only thing.
One evening our lights tripped the electricity in the caravan. The welcome map has a duty manager number. We called and within a few minutes a lovely manager appeared and showed us where the reset button was in the main bedroom. He was very pleasant and told us if any more problems to give him a call.
Check out is 10am. You gather up your bedding into the black bag provided and leave it by the front door. The only thing I felt was missing was a hoover for the carpet. It felt wrong leaving without hoovering. Check out was simple and easy and we had a coffee before we left. Would definitely return to the park and were very happy even if it's the back of beyond and you do need a car.
Make sure your caravan has heating.
