After reading previous reviews of this hotel, I wasn't looking forward to staying very much at all. My partner and I had been invited to a wedding at the hotel and it was the only place in the area we could book a room, and we had to pay the full £120 rate. I was fully expecting to be disappointed, but I couldn't have been more wrong.

On arrival the staff were friendly and helpful, and we were very pleased with our room. We were in the Duncombe room in the annexe, which was very spacious and comfortable had a lovely view over part of the garden at one side and fields on the other. We were also very impressed to find that the bath was in fact a spa bath!

We were also very pleased with the breakfast and the staff on duty. Not one thing disappointed us, it was a very pleasant stay.

Just back from two night stay at this hotel, we paid £118 for our 2 night stay including breakfast. We booked through late rooms at a discounted rate, definately not worth the £120 a night if you book direct. We were in the annexe our first night very peaceful and looking out towards the large gardens added to the tranquilty!!! However the next night was a different story, a wedding party had arrived for a pre wedding bash and even though there were a lot of guests we didn't mind. Although another party seemed to be going on which we could only describe as a rave??? the constant drone of a single beat !!! We are not old but still class ourselves young at 40 but this was not what we were looking for on our stay to visit york. My advice would be if your thinking of booking phone ahead and ask what functions are planned for your stay or don your glad rags and mingle with the guests. We didnt get slept this side of midnight for our long drive home!! Accomodation in annexe, breakfast and staff excellent . Would visit again but midweek for a quiet break.

“Very Cold room and atmosphere!”

The outside of the Hotel is very impressive. We were directed to a little cottage attached to the Hotel and were given a room in the attic. The room was clean and comfortable however there was a power cut and we woke up freezing during the night. Reception staff offered to move us to another room in the morning, however we still had hot water and rather than walk through the hotel looking like a dogs dinner we declined. We were only booked in for one night. If we hadn't been so cold we would certainly have enjoyed our stay. The breakfast was lovely no complaints at all there. The hotel has a lovely big conservatory and is pleasantly decorated. Had we been offered a discount or a complementary meal for our ordeal I would have felt alot happier. Overall I would stay again, however I should have been a bit more vocal about my complaint. My husband says he wouldn't go back.

The outside of the hotel is beautiful, but unfortunately the inside rooms in the annex were not so good and certainly not worth the price quoted to stay (120.00 with breakfast) My advice - do not stay race week as during a previous stay the breakfast was cooked fresh to order and during race week it was "under lights" and was cold. The staff are friendly but could smile a bit more, I would not stay here again. Jane, Scunthorpe.

“Beautiful grounds, Poor service”

Parsonage Country House Hotel

We had our wedding here last year, We chose the parsonage because there is lots of space and the grounds were beautiful. Fortunately we had a gloriously sunny day and therefore benefited from the beautiful grounds to the full.

Unfortunately the rest of the experience did not match up. the rooms were very expensive for what they were and our guests were charged a "discounted" rate (still at least £100 per room I think) however I was told later much cheaper rooms were available on the web. The starters and pudding were nice but the main course was frankly horrible and then there was a catalogue of mistakes and poor service at our wedding which would take too long to list. They do about three weddings a week here and you feel as if you are on a production line. Lots of requests we made re the room set up, timings etc (which had all previously been agreed in writing) were ignored and the Parsonage just chose to run things how they wanted to on the day.

Amongst other disapointments were; no drinks being served to the top table on the day, cake being served during the day not the evening (and an ensuing argument at the top table where they insisted they were right), losing our first dance CD etc etc. I was also very disapointed to find that despite a drop in numbers our final invoice still included the same costs for wine etc (this was rectified when I requested it) Following our wedding we wrote a letter detailing all the things which had gone wrong and I had to chase for a response to this. We were offered a meal on the house however the response letter argued against every point and said our Best Man should have ensured that all our requirements were met - despite the fact we had agreed in writing what the Parsonage would be responsible for.

No one took the trouble to talk to us on the day or make us feel in anyway special and the response to our complaints was frankly chidish (arguing at the to table about how many layers our cake had - clearly I was right here - I had bought it myself and delivered it the previous day! - in the letter they still refused to acknowledge this!). The response letter denied any fault on their part . It felt as if the place was ran by a bunch of kids on the day who had no interest in providing a good service and refused to accept responsibility for any of the things that went wrong.

Frankly if the letter had just apolgised and accepted responsibility I would not be writing this review detailing my disapointment - I would have been fine about it.

This is such a shame as the grounds are beautiful. Fortunately these issues paled into insignificance on a fabulous summers day and thanks to the grounds, our photos are beautiful.

If you book your wedding here. DO get your best man or someone else in your party to look after everything and liaise with the Parsonage to ensure they are doing what's been asked of them. Also try your best to try the food. We requested to do this however were told that we couldn't - on reflection we should have insisted as the main course was awful and it wasn't just our personal taste - lots of our guests commented on this.

Due to the beautiful grounds and location, the Parsonage are always booked years in advance and therefore they get to call all the shots. I suspect they wont worry about a poor review as they are always assured to be busy. The landscape is just lovely.
