Have stayed here twice now and I have to say the quality has been a bit hit and miss. The staff are really good, very attentive and pleasant. The public rooms could do with a bit of an overhaul really - they look a bit on the shabby side. Food in the restaurant is good but quite pricey. On my first visit I stayed in the annex to the hotel. The room was a fair size, bathroom quite nice. You could hear the tv in the room next door slightly but apart from that it was OK. The second time I stayed here I was put in the coachouse and the room was nowhere near as good. It was still quite large but the walls appeared to be made of paper as you could hear people talking through them. I was staying here on business but the hotel was hosting a wedding (thursday night). Although the music went off at midnight there then followed nearly 2 hours of people in the adjoining rooms making an awful lot of noise, slamming doors etc. I really think that the hotel should make an attempt to house wedding parties all together, and not interspersed with their other guests. So, basically the hotel is OK but nothing special.

After reading previous reviews of this hotel, I wasn't looking forward to staying very much at all. My partner and I had been invited to a wedding at the hotel and it was the only place in the area we could book a room, and we had to pay the full £120 rate. I was fully expecting to be disappointed, but I couldn't have been more wrong.

On arrival the staff were friendly and helpful, and we were very pleased with our room. We were in the Duncombe room in the annexe, which was very spacious and comfortable had a lovely view over part of the garden at one side and fields on the other. We were also very impressed to find that the bath was in fact a spa bath!

We were also very pleased with the breakfast and the staff on duty. Not one thing disappointed us, it was a very pleasant stay.

Just back from two night stay at this hotel, we paid £118 for our 2 night stay including breakfast. We booked through late rooms at a discounted rate, definately not worth the £120 a night if you book direct. We were in the annexe our first night very peaceful and looking out towards the large gardens added to the tranquilty!!! However the next night was a different story, a wedding party had arrived for a pre wedding bash and even though there were a lot of guests we didn't mind. Although another party seemed to be going on which we could only describe as a rave??? the constant drone of a single beat !!! We are not old but still class ourselves young at 40 but this was not what we were looking for on our stay to visit york. My advice would be if your thinking of booking phone ahead and ask what functions are planned for your stay or don your glad rags and mingle with the guests. We didnt get slept this side of midnight for our long drive home!! Accomodation in annexe, breakfast and staff excellent . Would visit again but midweek for a quiet break.

“Very Cold room and atmosphere!”

The outside of the Hotel is very impressive. We were directed to a little cottage attached to the Hotel and were given a room in the attic. The room was clean and comfortable however there was a power cut and we woke up freezing during the night. Reception staff offered to move us to another room in the morning, however we still had hot water and rather than walk through the hotel looking like a dogs dinner we declined. We were only booked in for one night. If we hadn't been so cold we would certainly have enjoyed our stay. The breakfast was lovely no complaints at all there. The hotel has a lovely big conservatory and is pleasantly decorated. Had we been offered a discount or a complementary meal for our ordeal I would have felt alot happier. Overall I would stay again, however I should have been a bit more vocal about my complaint. My husband says he wouldn't go back.

The outside of the hotel is beautiful, but unfortunately the inside rooms in the annex were not so good and certainly not worth the price quoted to stay (120.00 with breakfast) My advice - do not stay race week as during a previous stay the breakfast was cooked fresh to order and during race week it was "under lights" and was cold. The staff are friendly but could smile a bit more, I would not stay here again. Jane, Scunthorpe.
