“Relaxing Stay in a beautiful house.”

Macdonald Leeming House

30 Jun 2008

I have two dogs and wanted a getaway for our wedding anniversary. I was impressed that they would welcome dogs and we were allocated a room that opens straight on to the grounds. The dogs loved it - especially the rabbits, there are lots on the grounds and they wanted to chase them. We had not taken them away before and was worried how they would be.

The house gives you an experience of a victorian house and the gardens lead straight down to the lake. We had dinner booked, ordered the champers and as we sat down we were told our dogs were making too much noise and sounded distressed. My husband went to settle them - they just fretted and missed us. I asked if we could then eat our dinner in our room and they were so obliging - yes, of course - nothing was a problem!! It is very rare to find such accomodating and friendly staff.

The sitting room where we had pre-dinner drinks was a little quiet and could have done with a bit of background music. All the main lights in the corridor were on sensors and it was very strange thinking you were walking down a dark corridor - but of course they do come on!!
You can sit and watch the world go by and be pampered by the staff. It is very quirky and we would definately go back.

“Beautiful hotel let down by a lot of small problems”

To sit on the terrace of this hotel on a fine evening and look out over Ullswater to the hills beyond is sublime. And this is the most beautiful hotel in the most delightful of settings.

However I can't help feeling that the edge was taken off an otherwise enjoyable stay by a number of problems. The first room they gave us had no running cold water, the second was short of light bulbs. The moderately expensive white wine we ordered for dinner was served warm. There was dirty laundry piled in the corridor for the whole time we were there. They charged £2 to pay by credit card.

Now when you are paying over £1000 for a three night stay - none of these things are acceptable.

Having got that off my chest, we did enjoy our stay. The restaurant was good and the staff (mainly foreign) were charming and helpful. The lounges were pleasant places to sit and relax and the grounds which run down to the lake are stunning. Our room was comfortable and had a balcony with spectacular views. I will stay again but this time hope that they have smartened up their act.

“Brilliant! Best hotel to stay at especially if you have dogs!”

Macdonald Leeming House

Really lovely hotel set in gorgeous grounds. You can see on to the lake from all of the rooms at the back of the hotel and it's an amzing view.
You can get down to the lake from the grounds of the hotel which is lovely.
WE have dogs, i can't beleive they allow dogs in this hotel as it's gorgeous! we were given a room 'suitable for dogs' on the bottom floor. i couldn'd beleive it when i got in it was brill! it was very swish and had obviously just been done up (traditional style) with French Doors out onto the grounds so the dogs could get out easily rather than trudging through the hotel.
Don;t get me wrong this is not the sort of hotel you can take poorly behaved dogs...this would def be frowned upon! but if you have well behaved pooches, love long walks and like a bit of luxury then this is a fab hotel for you.
in terms of the rest of the hotel experinece: the food was great breakfast wise but if you have dogs you can't eat at the restaurant which was fair enough. we just went to the local pubs in glenridding which is the nexy village along if you turn left out of the hotel. there is a really nice restaurant if you turn out of hotel left and continue for about 5 minutes - drive past the first cafe bar place and it is next on your left at a junction.
as for clenliness at the hotel - all great and the maids were great and changed the towels and washes etc every day.
the staff are very helpful in every way.

all in all a very good place to stay if u have dogs or not. don;t worry though if u don't have dogs, you wouldnt even necessarily notice there were dogs in the hotel as all dogs are kept on leads and are well behaved and generally are kept away from the guests.

My hubby and I stayed at this fab hotel for a 3 night stay at the beginning of March. As a previous reviewer stated, this is a hotel for the "elderly" but I disagree that you have to be 70+. I am in my late 50s and have a very modern, young outlook on life, but I do like my comfort together with good food and good service.
Leeming House Hotel is all of these things, log fires, afternoon tea, gorgeous views over the lake and comfy bed and pillows. Yes, the food is a bit "prissy" and not a lot of it, my hubby was still a bit hungry after a starter and main course, but there are plenty of places to eat out if you so wish.

The weather, as to be expected in March, was bad, rained most of our stay, but it didn't stop us from having a wonderful time. We met a lovely couple during our stay and had many a long chat in front of the log fire after our evening meal with coffee and the obligatory G + T!!

Summing up, Leeming House is a place I would love to visit again and I highly recommend it, but maybe not if you're in your 20s or 30s.

“Great Country House hotel experience”

Macdonald Leeming House

This is a great hotel for a Northern Lakes getaway. Very traditional country house style, log fires, great breakfasts, afternoon tea in the library. Staff really friendly and helpful. Beds large and rooms have good views of Ullswater. Minor criticism that some of the carpets look a bit scruffy, but overall I would definitely go back, and think it is really good value for money, particularly if you are used to paying for hotels in South East and London
