“Want to go back... and so does my dog!”

Kitley House Hotel

27 Feb 2008

Loved the stay there. We stayed there over a weekend in a four-poster room. We liked it a lot. Great room and bathroom, staff friendly, unintrusive and unlike some other elegant country hotels quite down to earth.

We also ha my dog with us (one of the reasons we picked the hotel), and he loed it there soooo much - he would not go back into the car when we were about to leave. He thought it was his castle ;o)

celebrated sons 18th, stayed in two suites one of which had a secret door into the library ! Rooms were inkeeping with the style of the house. both suites were large and well equipped the food we had was good. the english breakfast excellent. Mostly what impressed us was the service which was extremely friendly and helpful. The murder mystery was a great success and the characters involved everyone. The whole visit was thoroughly enjoyable.

We stayed here when we went down for the weekend to Devon. One night was spent in another hotel and the other night in this one.

The hotel has a very impressive drive and grounds; although you do start to wonder if you are ever going to get to the hotel.

Our room was in the attic and a bit disappointing; it was small and dated. The people we were with had an even worse room where there was foam filler coming out of the wall; not painted or made to look nice.

The public rooms are nice but the room that you have drinks before dinner is like a holding room with no character or charm.

Dinner was ok but most of us ended up having steaks as there was nothing else on the menu that appealed and those were mediocre.

Overall the hotel was ok but for a similar amount of money I would have preferred to stay an extra night at the other hotel which is nearby and much nicer.

We were looking for hotels for our guests to stay when we get married later this year; we will not be suggesting this one.

“Nice hotel in need of TLC - rather overpriced”

Kitley House Hotel

1 Sep 2007

Beautiful old house in lovely grounds with a spectacular central stairwell. Sadly the inside of the hotel was rather run down (flakey paint and mildew on window frames, damp marks on the ceiling, 1980's style wallpaper and cheap bathroom fittings). We booked a suite. No proper double bed - just two singles pushed together. It was a lovely large high-ceilinged room, but instead of a chandelier type light fitting there was only a single sunken spotlight making it very dark at night. Dinner was very nice (although the library where we ate was quite dark so it was hard to visually appreciate the food). The staff were really great - very welcoming and friendly. This hotel could be really spectacular inside with a little investment. All in all a pleasant stay, but over-priced.

We stayed here in July 2007 for 2 nights to celebrate our wedding anniversary.
The hotel is a lovely listed building in a great location on the River Yealm, great walks in the grounds along the river. Would definitely recommend that you pay a little bit extra and go for one of the state rooms as they are really nicely done. Ours (the Repton Suite) was huge, lovely big comfy bed, big leather sofa, big flat screen TV etc. I looked at some of the other suites too and they were all very nice, especially the "honeymoon suite" which is called the Churchill suite (I think) - ask for the one at the top of the stairs with the roll top bath.
There isn't much actually to do at the hotel apart from relax. They do have croquet on the lawns, but no snooker room.
We ate at the hotel on one evening and the food was just mediocre, quite nice, but nothing special we felt, certainly for the published price of £35/head. There is a gastro-pub in Yealmpton, also a fish restaurant, another pub, or you could go down to the pretty villages of Newton Ferrers or Noss Mayo which both have 3 pubs.
Breakfasts were good, the produce was local and tasty.
Dogs are very welcome at the hotel.

Lovely area, great walks along the coast path at Wembury.

We would recommend this hotel for a relaxing stay. They do seem to have alot of weddings there so you may want to check that none are planned for your visit as the hotel was rather "taken over" on our last day by a wedding party.
