This was one of our last minute impulses to visit Yelagiri for a weekend break. Let me start by saying that Yelagiri is a very small place on a hilltop with nothing much to see (except a lake & park) or do. But if you are looking forward to break the chains of your corporate lifestyle and spend time with your family, you may go for it. We started from Bangalore around 16:30 and reached Yelagiri around 19:30. Zeenath Taj Gardens is one of the first hotels in the city (there would be a board on your right once you finish the climb) that you would see. It is next to Sterling Resorts. This place is almost like a resort sans the facilities. It was huge with lots of greenery and lungs space. Even at night, it was well lit.
Our first reaction was that we landed on to the wrong place as the care taker at the reception told us that we won’t be getting any dinner as guests are expected to inform in the morning for lunch and dinner requests. It was quite frustrating as we booked through Stayzilla and nobody informed us of that before. Also mind you Yelagiri is a very small place and almost a village with not much choice of food or lodging. Anyways we managed to speak to the owner Mr. Salman who sorted out the matter very quickly with utmost decency. We managed to have a good warm dinner. So, people travelling out to this place make sure that you put your lunch & dinner requests at the time of booking. Food is overall good to excellent. They charge you 175 INR per lunch & dinner per head and breakfast for 125 INR and you need to tell them in advance. You have veg & non-veg options both. Dinners are over by 21:30 in the evening. Breakfast between 08:30 to 09:30 and lunch between 13:30 to 14:30
Our cottage's location was excellent. We got a corner with a green lawn in front and a big garden onto our right. The ambience was very peaceful and full of greens. The cottage had just enough space for two people. One bed, one chair, some shelves, one TV and an attached bath. The room has sufficient ceiling lights. From cleanliness point of view, it was just ok. The bed sheet was torn a bit on one side, a few mosquito blood stains on the walls but if you are not a big cleanliness freak, you may pardon them for it. The blankets and covers were ok and so were the towels. The bathroom also has a geyser and again don’t expect too much cleanliness in there. People looking for plush or any sophisticated arrangement would be thoroughly disappointed. It is a place to unwind with nature and not for Cosmo-luxury.
They experience frequent power cuts and good thing is they have power backup for all except geysers. In case you are stuck for hot water with no power, just ask the staff and they would provide you a bucket of hot water. TV reception is not good and mostly out. So, carry your gizmos with some movies to watch at night as there is not much to do in the evenings and it is also chilly. It is important to mention that you won’t have signals at all places in Yelagiri including this resort. They do have a carom board, TT board, a chess board and you need to ask the reception for badminton. Oh one more thing, don’t expect room service as such. Though the staff is very help and courteous but they don’t apply their heads. You got to ask for what you need and they would try their best to provide. The staff also suggested and took us for trekking to a sunset point through the jungle. It is a walk through the bushes and you may like to avoid it as it is not worth. Instead you can enjoy the mornings and evenings by walking in the beautiful hotel premises or lying down on the grass or quitely passing it on the swings.
Overall it was a different kind of experience for me and it was good.
The corner cottages have more privacy with lawn in front. Ask for a different room if you don't...
