We were in Cairns on the tail of a near cyclone and there was wide spread flooding in the area.
The train was cancelled due to the risk of landslides, so we took the Skyrail to and from Kuranda.
The organisation at the Caravonica terminal was pretty poor, but then again there were a couple of hundred people queuing up due to the train problems, and the set up obviously was not intended to cope with such a volume of passengars.
The gondolas are reasonably comfortable and the journey is broken at Red Peak, where you have to change gondolas, and at Barron Falls, should you choose to get out and walk to the view points. Sadly there was so much water on the river we got no view (due to the massive ammount of spray, which took me back to my memories of the Maid of the Mist at Niagra!)
Kuranda is ok, with cafes, restaurants and a few shops, but the only "attraction" we got to see was Birdworld, which was well worth the entrance cost.
Caravonica is next to the Tjapukai aboriginal cultural park, worth a visit if you have $35 and a few hours to kill.

Thank you for your comments and feedback. This combination of extreme weather and scenic railway cancellations is thankfully, an uncommon occurrence. However, with sudden and unscheduled cancellations of the Kuranda Scenic Railway, Skyrail can experience large, unplanned volume of customers at short notice and although the queues may have been slightly longer for a short period of time, with a capacity of up to 700 guests per hour, the waiting time should have been relatively short.
After monsoonal rain, the Barron Falls are breathtakingly spectacular and the volume of water is quite incredible, so much so that at times the mist plume generated rises far into the air. Thankfully our lookouts at Barron Falls Station allow you to get up very close to the waterfall to provide the chance to witness mother nature in such a spectacular way.
Thanks again for your feedback and comments.
