I stayed at the Mantra Samui Resort for 2 nights on business.
All of the staff we came across were very friendly and could not do enough for you. The resort is certainly off the beaten track, up on a steep hillside overlooking the sea. There is a complimentry pickup from the airport. On arrival at Mantra the reception staff guide you to a seating area and give you fresh juice and a cold hand towel whilst they sort your paperwork, then you're taken to your room in a golf buggy - handy as its hot and necessary because of the hills.
My colleague and I were both upgraded from the 'Wow' rooms to the 'Love' rooms on arrival which was a nice touch. We'd already got a discount through hotels.com as it was a late booking so we paid £50 per night. This included free wi-fi and breakfast. The room I was upgraded to was lovely. A big double sun lounger plus jacuzzi on the balcony. The bed was huge with a big gong behind the pillows and two ornate hanging lamps either side. There is a large flat screen tv wih internet and loads of free movies and tv series plus a multitude of free music. Great shower and bathroom with all the lots of useful bits and pieces in addition to the usual.
There was no iron though, which was a surprise. I'm sure I could have got one from the very efficient reception with a short phone call but there should be something like that in the room as standard.
It would be useful if the wall mounted tv was on a swivel arm so it could be viewed form the bed.
My ony other criticism of the room was the wide platform that surrounds the bed at ankle height. It blends in with the floor and I whacked it three times in the same place with my ankle - ouch!
The breakfast is very good, as was the lunch and dinner we had there at the bar. The pool is an amazing infinity pool with views out to sea and bar stools set in them if youre thirsty whilst swimming! I note the review from 'MartinaM201' and it made me laugh - I saw this couple there and overheard them talking to another couple in the pool. Whilst I didn't hear them complaining or swearing, they did spend their entire time telling anyone that would listen how they travelled everywhere business class, stayed 5 star all the time and spent their time in various countries shopping and partying.....YAWN! No surprise that they turned out to be loudmouthed eejits and were kicked out - well done to the management!
As for their complaints of the steepness of the hill....that gradient is nothing....we spent 2 days on Samui looking at several properties which were up crazily steep roads, so much so that only a 4x4 would reach them. There is nothing dangerous about the roads at Mantra - unless you're tottering around in huge heels after a gallon of martinis....perhaps that was M201's problem? Funnily enough, they seemed perfectly happy with Mantra when I overheard them.
I would perhaps be a little concerned how busy the pool might get at peak season but there is also a sun deck further up the hill with loads of loungers and open air showers.
The Mantra Samui Resort is amazingly chilled out and superb value for money. The staff are great (one member even went out to get cigarettes for us!) There are also plans to open 2 more restaurants in the next few months which will be good too. We went out in Chaweng on the first night with Thai's we were there with. There is a free shuttle bus from the resort but I think it stops at 9. This could really do with going till late - I'm told the taxi's arent cheap (compared to Bangkok) so useful shuttle till late would be great! However, The resort is sop good that there is no need to venture out if you don't want to - especially if you were there with your other half. There are squash courts, a gym and spa on site and reception furnish you with loads of info in a little 'passport' on arrival.
Great place - Go there! You won't regret it!
Go for the 'Love' room with Jacuzzi

I have to say multiple thank yous to you:
You took the time and have written a very detailed review about your stay.
You have stood by our side and have deffended us from a vicious attack.
Most importantly, you made us laugh in the process!!
You points about the bed and the shuttle time are both valid.
We will make sure to let our Guests know to be careful not to hit their legs and we will soon introduce a late night shuttle to make our daily complimentary shuttle number a lucky 16:)
I am very happy that you had a great time in our hotel and could take advantage of most of the things Mantra has to offer.
I really hope that you visit Samui again and that we can have you with us! Robert
