We had a very nice time at Curtain Bluff for a week with our family of 4 (two adults and two college-aged children). The property has some strengths and weakness which overall makes me give it an average rating. It's probably more of a 3.5 overall rating but the food (which is very, very average) makes it hard for me to give it 4 stars. Here are some of the strengths and weaknesses of the property:
ROOMS: The rooms are really lovely. We were in adjoining junoir suites with our kids and the rooms were very well appointed and the bathrooms were spacious and clean. The rooms were similar to what you'd find at Cap Juluca. Where the rooms fall short is the patio furniture. It's cheap and there was only one lounge chair per patio. The junior suites overlook the surf beach, which is beautiful, but the beach isn't well-maintained and the beach chairs are not something you'd want to relax in all day.
ACTIVITIES: The activities program gets a full 5 Stars. Everyone who worked on the beach, from the snorkel trips to the fishing trips to the watersports were fantastic. The deep sea fishing was excellent with very well-organized and knowledgeable guides. Similarly, the snorkeling was staffed by two guides who made sure we saw sharks (every time we went out), sting rays, Moray eels, and tons of wonderful fish. The reef is beautiful, though it can get choppy out there. Though we didn't partake of the tennis program, it looks wonderful. We did take some of the exercise classes and they were great.
SERVICE: The service could not have been better - not too formal and not too friendly. PERFECT!
FOOD: Unfortunately, we really didn't like the food. We wanted to like it...wished we'd liked it.....but the food brings what is close to a 5 star property down to a 3 star. Breakfasts are ok. Egg dishes and pancakes are basically what is offered. It's not completely cooked to order as the bacon is premade. They advertise "real maple syrup" but at times it seemed like karo syrup. There were a lot of little things like that which aren't a big deal in and of themselves, but it adds up to make you think "I'm paying all this money for this?"
Breakfast is one thing that can be overlooked, but lunch is frankly BAD. It's a buffet but you can also order off of a menu. The buffet includes a salad bar (which was good but by day 7 we were tired of it) and rotating dishes. The dishes ranged from passable to inedible. They also didn't seem to fit with the ambience of an open-air beach setting. For example, one day they had corned beef and cabbage. It was a warm day on the beach and to see a tray of sliced corned beef and another of cabbage and potatoes was unappetizing. Other days they had turkey and mashed potatoes. Again, this isn't what you think of when you're in the Caribbean - unless you're on a mediocre cruise ship. One lunch a week they have a beach BBQ, which is perfect - just what you'd expect to be eating on the beach - but it's only one day a week. Every other day you're forced to wade through too many choices, none of which are great. Ordering off the menu is not much better. The choices consist of club sandwiches, hamburgers, tuna sandwiches, etc. The sandwiches are at a quality that you'd get at your local sandwich shop or I-Hop.
Dinners were a little bit better, but very uneven. There is a restaurant at the main house and another one on the beach. The beach restaurant is Italian food and it has a lovely ambience. It's only open a few nights a week. The food is ok but not terrific. For instance, the marinara sauce is made from primarily canned tomatoes. The flavor was fine but you wouldn't say anything on the menu was delicious. At the main house restaurant, the food was mixed. The menu changes every day (which is nice) but you'd have a pretty good appetizer followed by a "just ok" entree and feel cheated for dinner.
Our family loves good food and realized that eating well is a big part of our vacation experience. By the end of our 7 night vacation, we were dreading meal times because it just wasn't great. Because the property is all inclusive, food factors in very strongly in reviewing this property and it just doesn't reach the 4-star mark.
BEACH: The "calm" beach is rocky but once you get past the rocks it's fine. The beach chairs are fine and we didn't have trouble finding chairs, although sometimes we were left with the last four on the beach (by the time we got down there). The beach service was very good. We never used the pool though it seemed very nice.
This property has many repeat customers. In fact, at times you can feel a bit like an outsider because it seems everyone knows each other. I really wished the food had been better as we might have also been a repeat visitor but next time we go to the Caribbean, we'll go elsewhere.
The Junior Suites are great.
