My husband and I actually stayed at this hotel with our daughter approximately 4 years ago. I am writing this review now as I wasn't a Trip Advisor member back in those days, but I am now and thought it a good idea to warn people just how bad this hotel really is. In fact, I can't believe Thomson are still sending customers to this hell hole. Luckily we only stayed for 6 nights, but that was bad enough. It was our first time to Menorca and sadly we haven't been back even though people tell us it is a really lovely place. I am sure it is but sadly our experience at the GRUBOTEL put us off for life.
The hotel consisted of small blocks scattered round quite a large area. Our accommodation block was situated the furthest from the reception area. It was a dingy, ground floor hell hole and it seemed like we had stepped back in time to way before the 70s. The furniture was falling apart and the bedroom window would not even shut, let alone lock. The bedroom was the most cramped I had ever stayed in and our daughter was supposed to sleep on the hard sofa in the lounge; something I was not happy about. The patio door was not secure either. The room was rarely cleaned and we had no A/C which meant it was airless and so stuffy at night that we could not sleep!! We went home exhausted.
The food was absolutely disgusting and I can't believe from reading other people's reviews that it is the same poor quality 4 years on. Breakfast was always cold and usually consisted of the left-overs the night before, including sprouts. Nothing was edible; our daughter lived off cold chips. The dining area was situated downstairs below reception and it was always a mad scrum to get a table.
There is absolutely nothing to do outside of the hotel, so for 6 nights we had to watch the dire entertainment which consisted of a few entertainers prancing around the stage dressed up in ridiculous costumes. Our daughter did enjoy the kids' disco though.
The beach, if you could call it that, was disgusting and reached via a steep set of steps - a definite health and safety issue as only a loose railing separated you and the drop below - very dangerous for children!
The staff were the most miserable we have ever encountered and clearly fed up of working in such a grotty place. I don't think we saw a Thomson rep the duration we were there.
As mentioned, we did stay here approx 4 years ago and it is interesting to see that nothing whatsoever has improved. I would never, ever return to this hotel. It is in desperate need of a refurbishment to at least bring it into the year 2000!!!!!
The only positive was the fact that we met some distant friends from Southampton, who we had a laugh with!
If you have booked to stay here, I hope you have only paid cheap (we did). I question anyone who gives this place even 3 stars, let alone 5. Trust me, it truly is awful - the worst holiday we have ever been on!
I hope this honest review helps anyone looking to book a holiday in Menorca soon. I wish I had trusted the bad reviews before we booked!!!
