Mare Nostrum Thalasso Hotel

MASS, MASS, MASS tourism.
Lots of noise from speakers and music all day long until late at night - with very poor sound quality. Breakfast was a joke: stuff you wouldn't feed your pig! Expensive pool bar (4,50 euro for a coffee), old installations (e.g. kids playground), the famed renovation has not touched the sanitary ware which is old and definitely unclean, but then again cleanliness is NOT one of their strengths... the sunbeds at the seashore outside the hotel are 5 euro per 2 +umbrella.
They gave me the wrong price on the phone, they admitted having made a mistake when I probed them during check-in, but presented me again with the wrong price at check out (an overcharge of 32,50 euro for just 1 night) so I had to go through the same process of explaining, waiting etc twice.
And of course for 162,50 euro a night for 2 adults and a kid in a bungalow, one should certainly expect a lot better!

  • Liked — Location (near city of Athens), views
  • Disliked — Noise; compromise of cleanliness; not good value for (enough) money

I stayed there with friends for 3 days at the end of May. The hotel was overrun by Liverpool fans in town for the CL Final (so was I but for the winners) so resources were probably a little stretched although it does not explain why my room (530 - the largest on the floor with a sofabed and armchairs) was not cleaned in the morning (vacated at 10 am). Breakfast was particularly dire but the bar at night was OK with the waitresses probably the highlight. Drinks were expensive.
The location is a little isolated although with a car you can reach the metro line, park and be in the centre of town in 40 mins or so. Less than 20 mins from the airport.
Nice tranquil views, OK facilities. Clearly used to be a vacation club (Club Med ?) and furniture in the rooms and the common parts was clearly late 70s/early 80s. The room was large but quite empty and the toilet perhaps 6/7 sq metres at best. We chose this as a result of limited availability rather than choice and see no reason to go back. Website certainly better than the real thing.

  • Liked — large room (go for the 30s). Quiet location
  • Disliked — very spartan and in need of refurbishment

My husband, myself and our 12 year old daughter stayed in Mare Nostrum for two weeks in August 2005. We needed a place in Athens were we can relax and we were very satisfied with our choice. We had a wonderful time. The weather was excellent, a much needed rest. Everything was very clean. Our room had wonderful views of Vravrona Bay, which we were told it used to be an ancient natural port. The surrounding views are simply stunning. There is a bus service just outside the hotel that takes you to the nearest subway. We were very appreciative of the location, because it was tranquil and unspoiled. We took a 10 minute walk by the sea from our hotel to the temple of Artemis. There is also a very interesting museum by the temple. We rented a car and explored the entire coast and took a daytrip to Delphi. We also visited the temple of Poseidon at Sounio to watch the sunset, it was only half an hour drive away from our hotel. Every morning I jogged at around 06:30 from the hotel to the temple of Artemis, along the sea. The watersports are excellent. We spent quite a bit of time canoeing. There is a small island right opposite the hotel, with a chapel on it. We also played tennis a lot.
Our room was lovely. The beds were a little hard but we managed to have a good sleep. Our maids did a very good job keeping our room clean. The beach at the hotel was not very nice, but we used the pool a lot and we were very happy. There is also a very nice beach that we used less than 10 minutes walk from the hotel, where we had drinks and dinned in Tavernas. We loved the Greek food. The service at the hotel varied and was generally fairly good. Overall, in our opinion Mare Nostrum was exactly what we needed and we would not hesitate to return again.

We stayed for five days at the Mare Nostrum during the Olympics. The place is ok. and that is about it. The web site for Club Med makes it look very nice, but all of the money went into the lobby and the web site. Lunch buffet is 23 euros. You can feed three for the same amount if you just go a mile down the road. You cannot put drinks on your room, you have to buy a drink book which never quite works out to the amount of the book and the leftover cupons go to waste. The Motel is somewhat hard to find. In fact if you don't have a real good idea where it is before you arrive the people at the Club Med booth at the airport cannot give you directions. Front desk service was non existent and the room is very cheap. I didn't have a bad time and the prices during the Olympics were very inflated but this place is really not worth the money. There are alot of nice places to stay in Greece. This is not one of them.
