Spent two nights here in August 2011 during a circuit tour of western Austria. We could have stayed longer, as it was a comfortable and historic hotel and the room was really fantastic for a family (with a seperate bedroom and balcony upstairs for the parents). There was a tv and a safe and a basic but certainly clean and acceptable bathroom. Wireless internet access was a bit spotty and from our experience in several hotels it seems clear that the region will never be known for its fluffy or soft beds and pillows. Breakfast was a multi-course event with a mountain of varied breads, a cooked-to-order egg course, and a fruit course. It takes a while to work through but was very substantial and high quality. We were happy yet occassionally stymied by the lack of English among many of the hotel staff, but they were generally very nice and helpful. It is a real family affair, and you can tell that they work hard. The restaurant itself serves terrific food in an outdoor garden setting that seemed to set the standard for the village. However, our service was somewhat dismal the one night we ate there (one wrong order, meals served 5 minutes apart, waited 25 minutes for check then given the wrong change) - perhaps it was just an exceptionally busy night as I imagine the locals wouldn't have been there in droves if that was a normal experience. Those issues were also mitigated by the very good food that was served.
The region itself was very pretty and a bit off the beaten track - don't expect Innsbruck or Salzburg attractions or crowds. Stumm was a pretty village and one night we were very lucky to stumble into a village festival with a 30-person band playing traditional music. Other restaurants in the village served up equally fine food (and very good local beers) as well. We headed over to Krimml Falls for a hike to the top one day, and visited the cheesy yet satisfyingly unusual Swarovkski Crystal World theme park on the way out of the Zill valley. We left the area wishing we had one more day to explore it, and the Landgasthof was a good base to work from.
