Yes the motel is old and it's been let run down a bit. Probably 30 years over-due for an upgrade. BUT once you get over the shock of the "budget" accommodation, you appreciate that it provides you with what you need. The view is magnificent, but even if you took that away, at NZ$85 a night, it's a very fair price.

The bar/restaurant next door serves pretty good food and cold beer. Don't be tempted to use the internet station there, it is completely useless. Instead use the internet station next to the motels reception, it too is old (1990's model) but it's able to handle a few emails, and other essential internet business you may need to do.

The cleanliness was first rate (considering what the cleaning lady has to work with), and the whole motel takes on a very "communal" feeling when kicking back with a drink on the patio at the end of the day.

Less than 1km from the Doubtful sound tour origins, this is the motel you sleep at in between your tours. If a few dollars were spent around this motel it would make a world of difference, and I imagine that rates could easily be doubled and it still be fair value.

Don't come here looking for luxury, but you will get a good nights sleep even if the matress is from the 1970's and a bit lumpy :-)

We stayed here for two nights that bookended a longer trip on Doubtful Sound. We stayed in two different rooms. The first was a bit older but still clean and functional. The second, which bordered the parking lot but faced the lake, was newer and actually quite nice. There's not a lot to do in the area other than Doubtful or Milford Sound, but this hotel makes a great base for doing either.

We stayed at the motel for 1 night. Checked in late in the night and checked out early in the morning. The reception staff was very helpful and made arrangements for our late check-in. We didn’t use any other facilities at the motel.

We stayed in a NZD85 a night budget unit. All we needed was a place to sleep and the room served our purpose. The room was dated and small, but clean. It had an ensuite, TV but no fridge. The room had fantastic views of Lake Manapouri. It’s a convenient place, if taking the Doubtful Sound cruise.

Although in need of a lick of paint. This is a well situated motel with fantastic views over Lake Manapouri. Our unit was comfortable with a large sitting out area. I was interested to read other reviews, a very mixed bag. I agree it does need updating but the food in the bar was very good and the service first class. My only complaint was the cold dining room where they served a very mediocre breakfast. The trip to Doubtful Sound was a wonderful experience and the motel is in a good position to get the boat across the lake. This is sandfly country so dont forget to take repellant!

This motel ( yes a motel ) some of reviewers were obviously expecting a 5 star hotel for $100 a night - offers typical fairly small motel rooms with million dollar views - the location is sensational. NB There was still plenty of room for our plentiful luggage & the rooms were spotlessly clean

The receptionist was the most together & helpful member of staff that we met on a 15 day trip in NZ. They were happy for us to leave the car overnight whilst we did the doubtful sound cruise with Chris from doubtful-sound.com ( FANTASTIC)

As others have said u can sit outside yr room enjoying the views, maybe lucky & see a deer walk by. The pub restaurant next door was very busy & very good. Breakfast is taken in separate room & was also excellent - our total bill for dinner & breakfast for 2 was NZ $79

If doing Doubtful sound cruise i would definately recomend staying here rather than Te Anau.
