Yes the motel is old and it's been let run down a bit. Probably 30 years over-due for an upgrade. BUT once you get over the shock of the "budget" accommodation, you appreciate that it provides you with what you need. The view is magnificent, but even if you took that away, at NZ$85 a night, it's a very fair price.
The bar/restaurant next door serves pretty good food and cold beer. Don't be tempted to use the internet station there, it is completely useless. Instead use the internet station next to the motels reception, it too is old (1990's model) but it's able to handle a few emails, and other essential internet business you may need to do.
The cleanliness was first rate (considering what the cleaning lady has to work with), and the whole motel takes on a very "communal" feeling when kicking back with a drink on the patio at the end of the day.
Less than 1km from the Doubtful sound tour origins, this is the motel you sleep at in between your tours. If a few dollars were spent around this motel it would make a world of difference, and I imagine that rates could easily be doubled and it still be fair value.
Don't come here looking for luxury, but you will get a good nights sleep even if the matress is from the 1970's and a bit lumpy :-)
