I have never written a review before but our stay last night at The Crinan was so appalling that I feel obliged to share our experience with others.
My husband and I stayed there as part of a tour around the West Coast of Scotland. We stayed in some wonderful places and The Crinan was by far the worst experience we had .
To be fair let me first of all highlight the good points, the location and views from the hotel are absolutely stunning and the bed was very comfortable, but I'm afraid that's where it ends.
We paid 350 pounds for dinner bed and breakfast and therefore expected the accommodation, food and service to be first class. The decor in the hotel is faded but not in any way elegant, everything is in need of upgrading. Our bedroom had cobwebs, dirty windows and mouldy tiles in the bathroom. Prior to dinner there were no canapes or amuse bouche served. We ordered clams as a starter to our meal and we were served with queenie scallops. When we pointed this out, the manager tried to tell us that the scallops were in fact clams and implied that we did not know better. I am a very keen cook and I know the difference between a clam and a scallop and I didn't appreciate being patronised when this was very politely pointed out. The starers were served before the wine arrived, the bread was the type of supermarket frozen rolls that you keep in your freezer for an emergency and they weren't even served warm. The main course was OK but lacked any sort of flair or imagination. The couple next to us asked for decaffeineated coffee and a chocolate and were told that the hotel only had instant and that there was no chocolate to accompany it. We gave up at this point.
As we checked out, we pointed out our disappointment in the meal and the standard of the room to the manager and were met with breathtaking arrogance and complacency. He refused to accompany us to the room so that we could point out what we were unhappy about, and his response was to tell us that The Princess Royal has stayed in the room that we used and loved it so there must be nothing wrong with it. I can only assume that the room must have been very convenient for Her Royal Highness as every time she turned over in bed her bodyguards next door would have heard her through the paper thin walls.
If you appreciate good food, good service and a well run hotel by people who treat their guests with respect, this is not the place for you. I suspect the owners have more interest in the art gallery that is located within the hotel, than in providing an experience to match the price tag.If the view and location are the only factors that matter you may well enjoy this hotel.
