While Jinka has a few "hotels" the only decent place in town is the Jinka Resort. Evidently built not too long ago, the grounds are nicely kept, with concrete sidewalks connecting the various guest buildings. Our room was spacious and clean, although the double bed was more of a full size as opposed to a queen. The room had a table and a chair, a big mirror, a large built-in closet, and a tiled, large bathroom with functioning toilet, outlet, large sink/mirror with hot water and a shower stall. While the stall had no curtain, the water pressure was more than adequate, which makes this place a precious commodity, given that it is the only place in town with running hot water.
The resort operates a nice restaurant on the premises with very good food. For those not crazy about injera, they serve soups and two different rice/meat/vegetable combos, with Ethiopian red and white wine as well as beer. They also have a professional espresso maker, and you can definitely taste the difference in coffee when the generator is down and the espresso maker can't be used. They also offer laundry services, but we checked in too late to take advantage of that. Being the only nice place in town, it gets booked months in advance. Most people show up here with private driving tours, so the tour operators tend to book several rooms at once.
Jinka is a small town on the way to Mago National Park, in South Omo Valley, near the Kenyan/Sudanese borders. The town is piled around the grassy landing strip that also serves as soccer playgrounds. Jinka has no paved roads or street lights, and everyone gets around on foot. It has a few amenities: a gas station, an airline office, and a very nice, private museum. The town runs its own power generator with adequate consistency. Even though the town receives flights, you can't leave town without a 4WD, and tour operators tend to drive their vehicles here (or to Arba Minch) from Addis to meet their passengers at the landing strip.
