The mahout was beating the elephant with a metal stick until it was bleeding. My kids will never forget that. Plus, the mahout was talking loudly on his cell phone for the whole ride - I found this very disturbing. But the worst part was they would not let us take photos of ourselves on the elephant. THEY took photos, and tried to sell them to us for.....800 baht EACH. That's right. 800 baht for one photo. Shocking. Even at Phuket Zoo they only charge 200 baht for a photo with the tiger, snakes etc.
