“Superb Spa - well worth a visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

The spa in this hotel is excellent. I am pregnant and suffering with a bad back. Hence, the number of suitable treatments is very limited. On ringing to make the appointment, the receptionist was extremely well informed and knew exactly what my options were. She recommeneded a facial and reflexology. Both treatments were excellent, but the reflexology has had a lasting impact on my mobility and well being. The therapist was exceptional and explained everything really well. After the treatments, I had a very good lunch in the bar. The service was excellent and their Goats Cheese Tart is very good. The only disappointment was a fairly tastless American Cheese Cake.

“Recurring themes of dissapointment it seems!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

My wife and her small party were most dissapointed by their recent stay at this premises. I think what annoys even more is the recurring theme of rudeness that has been a feature of some of the reviews. Now I appreciate people have differing experiences and there is good and bad but most of these comments seem to come from one particular aspect of the hotel business, RECEPTION. Furthermore it is not good enough to have water issues within the hotel without telling guests upon check-in. Even worse is then not dealing with the issue and not making the necessary ancillary arrangements to deal with the knock on effects such as delayed dinner reservations. It seems from a number of comments that this has been so for quite a while and resulted in some of my wife's party not having an opportunity to shower before dinner. Not what one would expect from a property such as this. In a recession it is cut throat for that little bit of business that is out there but at what price? This behaviour will ensure that many people will be one time visitors to such a Hotel. My advice to the hotel is very simple. Be more friendly/courteous to visitors and tell people if there are issues upon check-in or at worst make alternative arrangements immediately within if this issue is discovered again. Not a good experience for anybody. A birthday night away was sadly not enjoyed at all

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent experience at Johnstown House Hotel. It was with deep regret that I heard of your comments as this is not the standard we are striving to achieve at the hotel. We consider all comments received to be an invaluable source of information on guest satisfaction.

Firstly, I would like to apologise for any inconvenience or annoyance caused as a result of our shortcomings. Unfortunately we had a major water leak within the hotel premises. Although this was an isolated incident, please be assured that immediate steps have been taken to ensure no re-occurrence of this regrettable situation.
With regard to the other issues your have mentioned, rest assured that we are dealing with these internally.

In the meantime, thank you once again for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you on your next visit to Johnstown House Hotel and Spa.

“very sad to see standards have slipped to average from excellent”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

been going to this hotel for past 5yrs with a group of very stressed mums for our annual well earned treat. this year however we noticed many slips and were very disappointed.the bar and lobby area were so Cold, the outdoor hot tub was also cold, the heated relaxation beds.lanconium and calderium heated seats were also cold, sunday morning breakfast was chaos, now saying that -they were having probs with no water that weekend so maybe that might explain things- i have to say-the staff are all lovely and the beds are to die for with their cloud soft mattress toppers and duvets..upstairs- the spa area, the therapists and the treatments are first class. the food in the bar is really nice-our meal in the restaurant was delicious and promptly served.seemingly there going through a management changeover too so hopefully they will rectify the little problems quickly-because when this hotel is at its best--it really is one of the best weve been to. we wont be put off and will be booking our escape there again next year, where hopefully it'll be back to its usual standards, but if not we'll be booking elsewhere, but would all be really really sad to have to do that. so heres hoping for good things to come

Room Tip: all rooms are good but just make sure you get a mattress topper on your bed.. bliss

“Amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We spend 2 nights at Johnstown House Hotel and we would not have 1 single complaint. We arrived very late on the first night but we were checked in with no problem, staff were all lovely, so friendly and welcoming. Food was out of this world. There was quite a bit of a queue for breakfast on the second morning but we knew there was a big function group in house and staff had given up a heads up to try and come for breakfast early. Dinner was amazing, bar food was lovely. Spa was lovely, so relaxing. Every staff member we met was friendly and helpful.
Overall, myself and my partner had a lovely relaxing, romantic weekend and we cannot wait to go back!

“Rude check in staff member and lack of running water”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We arrived at the hotel on Saturday afternoon and checked in. We were told that dinner was booked for 7pm despite the fact that we had email confirmation stating that it was 8pm. When we requested to move dinner to 8pm (as per our booking) we were told immediately "no way" and then shown the booking sheet of tables that night. There was no apology, and we were made to feel like our request was completely unreasonable and that our email confirmation was completely irrelevant.

We then went to use the pool facilities, which were excellent and the staff were all very helpful and friendly.

The food at dinner was excellent and again, the staff were super. The only issue was when we were served tap water at the table, there was an extremely strong smell of chlorine off the water. Bottled water was then supplied but we were told that we would need to pay for the first bottle and then all other bottles would be complimentary. We could see other tables had sent back the tap water and bottled water was being supplied to all other tables. When our bill came, we were charged for the water but then when raised with the waiter this was taken off the bill.

Our table went in to the bar after dinner and it came to light that there was now no running water in the hotel at all. We only discovered this when there was no water in the bathrooms. Staff seemed confused and there was a lack of information among guests and staff. We had to request a bottle of water to bring back to our room to brush our teeth. Luckily water had returned in the morning.

I would have to say that despite some excellent staff members and nice food in the restaurant, I don’t think I would stay in this hotel again based on my most recent experience.

Dear Reviewer,

I am very disappointed that you did not enjoy your recent stay with us at the Johnstown House Hotel due to the two areas that you highlighted.

The first item with regard to the receptionist rudeness I am very sorry that this happened and that your dinner booking was booked in for 7PM instead of your original request of 8PM. I have spoken to the receptionist in question and I have re trained her on this issue.

The second item was a water issue which was due to fault in the water pipes coming into the hotel grounds, this was something that was not foreseen and I am again sorry if you felt that the hotel management team did not deal with this in a manner that you thought was satisfactory.

I do note that there is a lot of areas that you mentioned that you were happy with and I would like to thank you for posting your full thoughts on your stay.

I do hope that you will revisit us in the future and you will see that your recent experience was not a common occurrence.

Best regards
