We recently stayed at the BackCountry Lodge for two nights and we were very disappointed with the lodge. We thoroughly enjoyed our bus ride to the lodge because our driver was wonderful and we got to see so many animals along the way. We were even so lucky as to see a grizzly bear and her two cubs. But, that was the best part of our stay.
The cabins were clean, but not much ambience in the room. For the price we paid, $750 for two people, we were very disappointed. While I realize that the season in Alaska is short and so you do pay top dollar to stay in the park, I did not feel that the lodge was worth what we paid.
The food was TERRIBLE. The first night we were there everyone complained about the meal. The chicken was RAW, the potatoes boring and the vegetables were overcooked. How about giving me my money's worth, at least!!! The meals did not improve with our stay....everyone we spoke to during our stay, was complaining about how bad the food was.
We also went to listen to one of the lectures they had in the evening. It was given by a college student they must have forced into doing a power point presentation about prehistoric animals. It was absolutely embarrassing for him and us. He was totally unprepared, never rehearsed and actually apologized for his slides which he said he didn't know why he included them and also said he didn't understand them. Great, huh?!
Instead of staying at the lodge, I would recommend that you just take the bus ride into the park, eat lunch at the lunch and then escape. I'm sure you can find a much better way to spend your money.
To make matters worse, you don't even get a view of Denali from the lodge.
