Like some other Trip Advisor reviewers, I rate the Many Glacier Hotel above average not because of the room or food, but because of the views, the staff and the lobby experiences.
On Day 7 of our 12-day Glacier/Waterton Lakes National Parks adventure, we drove to the Many Glacier Hotel from Waterton Lakes National Park by way of Cardston, Alberta so we could see a little bit of the Canadian plains. It was a beautiful and easy drive. We stopped for groceries in Cardston (the hometown of Fay Wray of King Kong fame and the location of the Fay Wray fountain…not very spectacular) and got busted at the Piegan, MT border crossing for trying to sneak apples back into the States. Actually we bought them in the States and didn’t notice that the little stickers were removed…Lesson learned.
We stayed at Many Glacier for 3 nights and enjoyed it the most of any of the Park lodges (Lake McDonald, Rising Sun, E.Glacier and Apgar Village). The staff was very, very friendly. The views from our room and from the lobby were awesome! The room was nothing special, keeping in mind that it is 90 years old. The bed was small and the room was noisy at check-in & out times. Other than those times, it was fine. As a previous reviewer noted, it is quite a hike up to the parking lot to get your car. The Many Glacier Hotel lobby is nice…it’s big, had lots of couches and chairs, had big fire roaring and had fantastic views of Swiftcurrent Lake and the mountains around it. A nice touch every evening was having a pianist play for an hour followed by a violinist for another hour. On Sunday evening they had a hootenanny that featured bell boys, guides and other hotel workers plus the professional pianist and violinist…lots of fun!
There are many hikes in the area. We took the easy walk to Red Rock Lake and Red Rock Falls which was about 3.5 miles with only a 100’ elevation change. There are many other more strenous hikes in the area. We saw a humongous male moose at the lake and had stunning views all the way to the falls. There was also a mother grizzly with 2 cubs, 3 mountain goats and another grizzly on the hillside near the turn-off to the hotel.
Sandwiches and a beer at the Swiss Room was $15 + tip for two. It was good. We ate two breakfasts in the Ptarmigan Dining room. One was French toast for one of us and oatmeal for the other and it cost about $15 + tip. The other breakfast was oatmeal for one of us and the NPS standard $11.25 all-you-care-to-eat buffet for a total of $18 + tip which was filling and OK, but nothing special.
Many Glacier is 12 miles from Babb MT where there is a bare bones grocery store, a post office and restaurant (we did not eat there) and about 20 miles from the village of St Mary MT where you will find a laundromat, gas station, a better grocery store and of course gift shops.
We also had lunch at Two Sisters located ½ way between Babb and St Mary. The fish sandwich was very good, the service was fair and we were surrounded by Montana house flies. But, the best lunch we had on the whole trip was at the Park Café in St Mary – 2 grilled cheese sandwiches and fries + 1 piece of strawberry pie with two scoops of vanilla ice cream – DELICIOUS!!
On our next trip, we'll come back to Many Glacier and definitely have another meal at the Park Café.

I give this hotel an above average rating because the location is just incredible. The views are amazing and the lobby is beautiful, althought they couldn't use the fireplace because of the fire threat so that was a bit of a bummer. This is the only lodge inside the park with an elevator and it was slow but did the job. We only used it for bringing our luggage up, otherwise we used the stairs. The room was pretty in a very rustic way and had a nice tub for soaking in. The walls are paper thin and you can hear every conversation from the rooms next to you. The parking lot is up the hill and it's a bit of a climb. There are many easily accessed trails from the hotel and the hiking in this area is fantastic. I would highly recommend stopping in the bar for a drink and chocolate fondue. All in all, a very good experience, you just have to remember that you are stepping back in time and the amenities are few.

“Great Location, Beautiful Views”

My husband and I took a long Labor Day weekend and visited Glacier National Park for the first time. Our plans were last minute and we were able to book a value room at Many Glacier Hotel. We have stayed at many National Park Lodges throughout the country and this one was very good. Our rooms were large and clean and beds comfortable. We enjoy the ambiance of no TV's and fairly rustic accomodations. I would strongly encourage getting a lakeside room. The views are gorgeous. We found the food to be better than expected and the Ptarmigan Dining Room had beautiful views (make sure the sun has nearly set before asking for a window view). The lodge was filled with little surprises and a wonderful deck. Don't forget to bring your binoculars as grizzly bear families were close by. There were great hiking trails nearby. DOWNSIDES: The rooms were a little noisy. We could hear our neighbors talking. The parking lot is up a flight of fairly steep stairs tho you could park to load and unload your car. Enjoyed our stay and were happy with our decision with Many Glacier Hotel and it's location.

I find the National Park lodges very difficult to rate and review. They are very different to typical hotels and you pay over the odds for what you get.

This lodge is a very large (in standard issue NPS brown paint) and very ordinary hotel in a stunning location. In my view you have to pay for a lake view otherwise you are missing the point as the views over the lake, especially at sunrise are unparalled. We had a suite (for 2 of us) which secured us a balcony overlooking the lake with plenty of light and air. One room (with the balcony) had a queen size bed and a small bathroom with shower, basin and WC. The other room was much larger with a king size bed, bathroom with clawfoot bath (and shower over) but the window was small and overlooking the kitchens. So we had loads of space. On balance if we had only had one room I would have taken the smaller room with the view.

The furnishings are a bit shabby and basic. Think clean 1970s motel style. We had no issues with the standard of housekeeping (stayed 3 nights). No obvious mouse encounters (earlier review) but I don't doubt they were there - as a member staff said when we we were in Bryce Canyon Lodge: "There are mice in all the rooms".

The noise insulation isn't great but we found everyone had largely gone to bed by 10.00pm so this didn't bother us at all.

Remember you are not going here for facilities etc. You pay (a lot) for what is says on the tin. And you are staying out in the wilds.

Dining room is ok - nothing more. Standard NP lodge fare done resonably well with large portions. We never tried dessert but they sounded a bit sweet for our taste. Surprisingly good wine selection. They do not take reservations. Midweek we had to wait 40 minutes for a table. At the weekend in can exceed 90 minutes - take a book! There was a musician of varying quality in the dining room each night. As non-Americans having a pianist finishing with the US national anthem as US nationals wondered whether to stand up and sing along (or not) felt a bit odd.

Breakfast was a wide ranging so so buffet (dishes are avaliable to order but few did) but fruit is available as is oatmeal besides the normal cooked fare.

We found all the staff (of whom a large number are Eastern European) to be polite and helpful. The only exception was trying to get the attention of a bellhop when we checked in - maybe they were all stunned by the party checking in with a parakeet. In the end we moved our own bags and used the asthmatic elevator.

The car park is a surprisingly challenging walk over a steep rise so when encumbered with walking gear be prepared.

Like all the National Park hotel rooms I've stayed in this one was quite basic and showed its age. We had 2 twin beds but the room was probably double the size of our room at Old Faithful Inn. It was clean and provided a breath-taking view. We were fortunate to have a balcony overlooking the lake so who would want a television anyway?! There was no elevator in our wing so the bellmen came in handy lugging the bags to our 3rd floor room.
Our food in the dining room was fine and service very friendly and efficient. Fun to sit outside in the evening before dinner and see the grizzlies on the hillside. Bring your binoculars.
Highly recommend the boat trip on the lake with a park ranger guide and the Red Bus tour on the Going-To-The- Sun Road. Among the most beautiful scenery you will ever see. Extremely informative as well--and great animal sightings.
Expect to be dazzled by what is around you outside not inside and you won't be disappointed.
