Like some other Trip Advisor reviewers, I rate the Many Glacier Hotel above average not because of the room or food, but because of the views, the staff and the lobby experiences.
On Day 7 of our 12-day Glacier/Waterton Lakes National Parks adventure, we drove to the Many Glacier Hotel from Waterton Lakes National Park by way of Cardston, Alberta so we could see a little bit of the Canadian plains. It was a beautiful and easy drive. We stopped for groceries in Cardston (the hometown of Fay Wray of King Kong fame and the location of the Fay Wray fountain…not very spectacular) and got busted at the Piegan, MT border crossing for trying to sneak apples back into the States. Actually we bought them in the States and didn’t notice that the little stickers were removed…Lesson learned.
We stayed at Many Glacier for 3 nights and enjoyed it the most of any of the Park lodges (Lake McDonald, Rising Sun, E.Glacier and Apgar Village). The staff was very, very friendly. The views from our room and from the lobby were awesome! The room was nothing special, keeping in mind that it is 90 years old. The bed was small and the room was noisy at check-in & out times. Other than those times, it was fine. As a previous reviewer noted, it is quite a hike up to the parking lot to get your car. The Many Glacier Hotel lobby is nice…it’s big, had lots of couches and chairs, had big fire roaring and had fantastic views of Swiftcurrent Lake and the mountains around it. A nice touch every evening was having a pianist play for an hour followed by a violinist for another hour. On Sunday evening they had a hootenanny that featured bell boys, guides and other hotel workers plus the professional pianist and violinist…lots of fun!
There are many hikes in the area. We took the easy walk to Red Rock Lake and Red Rock Falls which was about 3.5 miles with only a 100’ elevation change. There are many other more strenous hikes in the area. We saw a humongous male moose at the lake and had stunning views all the way to the falls. There was also a mother grizzly with 2 cubs, 3 mountain goats and another grizzly on the hillside near the turn-off to the hotel.
Sandwiches and a beer at the Swiss Room was $15 + tip for two. It was good. We ate two breakfasts in the Ptarmigan Dining room. One was French toast for one of us and oatmeal for the other and it cost about $15 + tip. The other breakfast was oatmeal for one of us and the NPS standard $11.25 all-you-care-to-eat buffet for a total of $18 + tip which was filling and OK, but nothing special.
Many Glacier is 12 miles from Babb MT where there is a bare bones grocery store, a post office and restaurant (we did not eat there) and about 20 miles from the village of St Mary MT where you will find a laundromat, gas station, a better grocery store and of course gift shops.
We also had lunch at Two Sisters located ½ way between Babb and St Mary. The fish sandwich was very good, the service was fair and we were surrounded by Montana house flies. But, the best lunch we had on the whole trip was at the Park Café in St Mary – 2 grilled cheese sandwiches and fries + 1 piece of strawberry pie with two scoops of vanilla ice cream – DELICIOUS!!
On our next trip, we'll come back to Many Glacier and definitely have another meal at the Park Café.
