We stayed in a western cabin for 1 night in August and found the whole experience excellent. The double bed was comfy enough and the rest of the facilities were fine, very rustic. The food in the restaurant might be a bit overpriced but both my wife and myself were pleased with the quality (pasta and steak) - but definately make a reservation in advance.

Stayed 2 nights in mid june in a pioneer cabin on north rim. 2 adults and 3 kids in our party. After reading reviews, I expected to have another family in the adjoining room but we were assigned the whole cabin ( #142and 145). There were 2 bedrooms, one with a double and twin, and the other with 2 twins and a wash basin. The bathroom sits between both rooms and also has a wash basin and shower. It was very rustic, but i expected that and we loved it. We asked for a cabin in the back so that our view was of the forest and we had deer pass by in the mornings. We did have a mouse in our cabin that came out at night..my kids named it "bob" and it kept me up worrying but the kids thought it was a great time. The food in the lodge restaurant was very expensive...and terrible. The steak was the best choice..but prices were outrageous for the food served. The food at zion lodge and bryce lodge is better and a little less expensive. The western cabins did look newer but we were expecting rustic and enjoyed our pioneer cabin...we would stay there again.

“Typical Xanterra Park Lodging - Noisy, Over Priced (but N Rim was worth it)”

Stayed one night in a Western Cabin. I thought it was kind of neat (rustic feel, propane fireplace) until we could hear every word spoken by our neighbors in the ajoining cabin. I've stayed in other Xanterra park lodging in other parks and can't understand why they can't upgrade the soundproofing. The GC Lodge on the N. Rim is spectacular, and dinner at the lodge is a must (make resv. well in advance). Overall, I liked the N. Rim much better than the S. Rim, so any lodging experience would be worth it (and there are not a lot of options on the N. Rim for lodging).

We spent one night at the North Rim in May 2006, in a western cabin. We loved the cabin, which had 2 queen beds, a dressing area with mini-frig, nice bathroom, gas fireplace and wonderful porch with 2 rockers. We took a look at the frontier cabins and they didn't look very attractive. Our cabin was perfectly quiet. We ate dinner in the dining room and we had very good food. And the views can't be beat. Interesting price comparison--we had stayed at Bryce Canyon the previous nights and a particular bottle of wine (retailing at about $8 in the eastern US) was $28 at the Grand Canyon versus $34 at Bryce. Both overpriced, but one less than the other. I bought some lovely earrings at the gift shop.

But what obviously makes it is the canyon itself. Wow! Liked the north rim much better than the south rim which we had visited 10 years earlier--still crowded but much less than the south rim. Saw giant condors at one of the viewpoints. Well worth the effort to get there.

“Enjoyable experience”

In May 2006 we stayed in a Frontier cabin at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Each cabin is divided in two and in our portion we had a full size bed and a twin bed. Lighting was very dim but we came back to our room when we were ready to go to bed. Other reviews mentioned that you can watch the sunset from the sun porch at the lodge and at night we did enjoy the talk by a ranger. We found the food in the dining hall to be delicious and service was excellent. We had salmon which was delicious. Remember to make advance reservations for your evening meal or else you can't eat - there is a snack shop at the lodge.

Wanted to show you the interior of the Frontier Cabin and also the bathroom. Small and primitive but it does have electricity.
