We spent one night at the North Rim in May 2006, in a western cabin. We loved the cabin, which had 2 queen beds, a dressing area with mini-frig, nice bathroom, gas fireplace and wonderful porch with 2 rockers. We took a look at the frontier cabins and they didn't look very attractive. Our cabin was perfectly quiet. We ate dinner in the dining room and we had very good food. And the views can't be beat. Interesting price comparison--we had stayed at Bryce Canyon the previous nights and a particular bottle of wine (retailing at about $8 in the eastern US) was $28 at the Grand Canyon versus $34 at Bryce. Both overpriced, but one less than the other. I bought some lovely earrings at the gift shop.
But what obviously makes it is the canyon itself. Wow! Liked the north rim much better than the south rim which we had visited 10 years earlier--still crowded but much less than the south rim. Saw giant condors at one of the viewpoints. Well worth the effort to get there.
