We were not disappointed with the Maswik Lodge. It is a basic, clean, good value hotel. It takes 5 minutes, if that, to walk to the rim. Most people are not at the grand canyon to stay in the room all day. this hotel is just fine!

I'd actually give this place 3 1/2 stars. They'd get the extra "half star" based on value. At $77, the cheap rooms are a good deal for the Grand Canyon. The only place better to stay for that money would be the atmospheric Bright Angel, but EVERYONE wants those rooms, so they're hard to get (I booked 6 months in advance for October and couldn't get one -- I even called back a few times hunting for cancellations). I don't think it's worth paying another $50+ to stay elsewhere at the Grand Canyon.
While the cheap rooms at Maswik have no air conditioning, that's probably only an issue on the hottest days of the year. The rooms do have a fan, and Grand Canyon Village gets pretty cool at night, even in summer. You do get 2 queen beds (hooray, no twins!) and a refrigerator for your $77, which is nice. Otherwise, the rooms are small and budget motel-like. The location is decent, as you can walk to the rim in 5 or 6 minutes, or take a shuttle bus.(or drive to the rim and park by the Bright Angel cabins).
I would avoid eating at the Maswik cafeteria. I tried it for breakfast one morning, and the food was below average and a bad value. Much happier dining at the El Tovar, but try to make dinner reservations in advance. Lunch is a particularly good value at the El Tovar given the quality and fair prices. And, if you're travelling with kids, the kids menu prices are the same at all the park's sit-down restaurants for lunch and dinner, which is another reason to "upgrade" to a better meal at the El Tovar. They also give the kids an activity book that then gets them a free "fancy" ice cream back at the Maswik cafeteria.
Okay....if you just realize you can walk to the rim of the Grand Canyon, then perhaps this hotel would be a 2-star! But anyplace else in the world, it wouldn't even be a motel six. Room was old and tired, view of dumpsters.....walk away from the hotel, hike the trails around the rim, have a blue margarita at the El Tovar (or dinner!!!) and try to book earlier and get a different hotel in the park.

We tried to get into the El Tovar, Thunderbird, Kachina and Bright Angel Hotels but were not able to so we booked the Maswik and we were not disappointed at all. The room was clean and updated and in a great location for us. Yes, it would have been nice to be right on the rim but this was closer than the Yavapai Lodge. The tour buses picked us up right in front of the Maswik and we even walked to the Bright Angel to pick up the bus too. All close and convenient.

Just got back from our third trip to the Grand Canyon- this one was booked through a local travel agent as we took the train from Williams to the Grand Canyon. The hotel booked for us was the Maswick Lodge which we hadn't stayed at previously. We were so very disappointed and frustrated- the front desk staff was the most un co-operative we have ever seen! In our group of seven, there were two elderly and one wheelchair and we were forced to walk the 1/4 mile from our room to the lodge for meals, we asked the front desk for help three times and were told there was no shuttle from the room to the lodge after 8:00 p.m. We had to wait two hours for the rooms to be ready, but the sole reason we would never consider staying there again was the rudeness of the front desk staff. We stayed at the El Tovar previously and sure missed the welcoming atmosphere and pleasant staff. From a 1 to 5 rating with 5 being the best we would give the Maswick Lodge a negative 2. Never again!
