We had the absolute pleasure of being onboard with Gina and her crew in May 2012. We booked the trip as a birthday gift for 2 of our party - what a way to spend the day - even in torrential rain. It has to be said that the weather was horrendous and really we should not have gone out. As it was our last opportunity to do so and as it was dry when we set off we decided to go out and hope for the best, the weather was supposed to remain fine and to be honest we were just unlucky. C'est la vie. We will try again next year and hope for a drier voyage.
The boat is in excellent condition, it is luxury in every sense, all the fittings, fixtures, and amenities are new, or seem very new - I have never been onboard a day boat with his and hers bathrooms. Calabaza has it all. The trumpet area is large so if you are a couple onboard with a larger party you will have your own space and this should not put you off. For those of you looking for a little less sun (we had an 18 month old baby on board) there is a large covered outdoor area at the rear of the boat and there is a large sitting area inside - the boat at full capacity (12 guests) can be easily undercover without feeling cramped.
Gina and her true were nothing short of outstanding. Their attention to detail, their courtesy, their expertise continued to shine throughout the day - even in the horizontal rain - their smiles never faded. They all complimented each other - laughed and joked along the way - their was not one moment when the team was anything but exemplary. By way of example, our party actually felt a little worse for wear - one of our party was left holding the baby and so could not partake in the snorkel trip as our heads were spinning too much, Gina was one step ahead, she took the baby, showed him the fish so that the last man standing could snorkel away. Others on board had new masks for snorkeling, Gina was diligently cleaning and adding washing up liquid to all the onboard masks and when finding out the others were new - immediately put toothpaste in the other masks - little things like this - made us realize how attentive and consistent the service was. This was not a one off - the team were all truly engaged and on the ball all the time. Upon disembarking - earlier than expected - the rain had to be seen to be believed. The team walked each passenger off one by one providing much needed support and rain cover to each of us. The extent of this was truly seen when it came to our baby. One of the crew unzipped the hood from his own jacket to cover the babies head, leaving himself totally exposed. Truly remarkable - this team is genuinely passionate about delighting everyone.
We were welcomed onboard with delicious banana bread it was far superior to our five star hotels. This set the scene for the food for the day, it was plentiful and very very good. We really enjoyed it all and only have positive things to say. The day started with the cake, then nibbles of hummus, dips and crudités, followed by a full lunch. The drinks could have flowed all day - as the weather was not so good, we did not indulge too much but I can highly recommend the rum sour! The rum punch has a secret ingredient and it was memorable to say the least. Try both.
Throughout the day we were not only impressed by the team itself but also what is included in the price. The team have an underwater camera on board and take photos of diving and snorkeling - the results are fantastic - and the full sized downloadable pics are provided free of charge in roughly 24 hours - great pictures and a lovely moment of the day. Many other companies charge for this.
I had read the reviews before booking and new this trip would be good- but I wasn't sure quite how good, good can be. Now I know. Please do not hesitate - the 5 star review is absolutely deserved and we look forward to being on board again. You will be truly delighted.
