My wife and I enjoyed our honeymoon at the Hilton following our destination wedding in Mexico. Overall, everything was extremely nice and most of the staff were very friendly and helpful. The people at the activity/excursions desk always seemed disinterested and less than helpful, however. Maybe, they aren't on commission--who knows. That's probably being nitpicky. As other posters have stated, the Hilton is a beautiful, modern property and very clean. The beds were wonderful and very comfortable. Everyone, including the maids, spoke great English and were quite friendly and helpful. It was a welcome change to be able to get conceirage-type help from your maids! We could ask them anything about the Island (restaurants, activities, rental cars, etc) and they always seemed to give great advice. Maybe we lucked out with our maids, but I doubt it.
We booked through Hilton HHonors points through frequent travel, so we were able to get an executive room on the 7th floor. This allowed us to use the executive lounge on the 8th floor for internet, free continental breakfast, "happy hour" 6pm-8:30 for free cocktails (mix your own rum, vodka, beers) and hors d'ouvres (spring rolls, chicken tenders, etc.). If you can get access to this lounge, I'd highly recommend it. It probably saved $150 U.S. a day between the two of us. It's not gourmet food or anything, but pretty decent for being free. Breakfast had a variety of cereals, juices, bagels, toast, turkey/ham/salmon, pastries, etc.
We were able to get an upgrade to a suite (rooms 737/739), because of our honeymoon and it didn't seem like the resort was at full-occupancy. The suite was WONDERFUL! The regular rooms are pretty spacious,as well; but if it can be swung--go for the suite. We were on the corner, so we had TWO balconies and a wonderful view of the ocean.
We usually had appetizers and a couple of drinks in the lounge and then went to St. Lawrence Gap (or the "Gap", as the native Bajans call it). A taxi was fairly inexpensive from the resort to the Gap--$20 Barbados/$10 U.S. each way. You will NEVER have trouble finding a cab to/from the Gap. We would typically be asked by about 3 or 4 taxi drivers if we needed a ride when walking around the Gap. We liked pretty much all the restaurants and bars that we visited there. Cafe Sol (Mexican) was good. They also had a different drink that was 2 for 1 each night. That always helps in Barbados when a typical dinner with some drinks would range $100-$150 U.S.D. Pisces (seafood) was really nice and great ambience. It's right on the water and they have lights on the water so you can see fish, turtles, etc at night. For a romantic dinner, check out Josef's. We met some friends that we met at the hotel there for a drink after their dinner and it was very nice and had neat decor, plus right on the water. Jumbies was also a neat restaurant in the Gap. It looks a dance-type bar when you walk in, but they have pretty good food upstairs. Then you can always go downstairs for a drink (or two, three). A fun Irish bar/restaurant was McBride's, also at the Gap. They have different entertainment nightly (deejay, live band, etc.). If you want a very special dinner and don't mind splurging (our dinner was $600 Barbados/$300 U.S.), go to the Cliff Restaurant. It is one of the 50 top restaurants in the world and was amazing. Right on the water (West Coast), with lighted water so you can see fish and turtles--it was tremendous. It's the type of place where you expect to see some celebrities. We rented a car for a day, so we drove. I'm not sure how much a taxi would be. If you take a taxi, make sure to ask the taxi driver how much the trip will be AHEAD of time. There are no meters, so make sure. 90% are honest and won't try to take advantage, but some will tack on some extra cash if they can get away with it. If you like playing in the waves, and/or boogie boarding (which we do), the Hilton is a great property for that. Don't go to the lifeguard stand and get charged $10. Walk next door to the Barbados Blue Dive Shop. You only need to give them a refundable deposit ($20 USD per board) and you can use for free. There are also many public beaches around the area, but we mostly stayed at the Hilton's beach. You may also see many "Arcades" in and around the area. These are slot machine rooms. That's the only gambling legal in Barbados. We tried two different arcades: one with a cash bar and one without. Surprisingly, we broke even both times after playing for about an hour at video poker. Maybe we had honeymoon luck. :-)
Another neat excursion that we went to was the Mount Gay Rum Distillery for a tour and tasting. It's the world's oldest rum distillery. Maybe we should have expected it, but when you go for a rum tasting, you taste straight rum--not mixed with anything. We like rum, but don't drink it straight. Anyway, it was pretty fun and included a buffet lunch and a couple rum cocktails, as well.
I guess the only negative thing about Barbados in general is the cost. Everything is pretty expensive compared to many places you can travel to around the Caribbean. It's not as expensive as Bermuda, but pretty high. The USA today at the Hilton was $4.50 U.S.! Overall though, a great place for a honeymoon or special trip.
