First let me describe the nervous start, then the fantastic holiday! (And it was fantastic, truly)
Several emails, a few phone calls, a couple of credit card transactions and we thought we were (finally!) all set to enjoy a relaxing holiday in this highly-rated, highly-reviewed place... but when we turned up at the airport we found there was no car to pick us up despite an email confirmation that there would be. We called the phone numbers only to go straight through to voicemail. As you can imagine, we were now thinking the worst: we'd paid a 100% in advance, based entirely on internet research and a couple of phone calls. And now that we'd landed in Barbados, neither the promised airport transfer, nor the ever-helpful Jacqui could be traced!
A thirty minute ride later, we arrived at this quiet property, only to be greeted by an elderly gent who asked us to wait for Jacqui since he couldn't let us in without her. (No kidding!!)
Anyway, on to the fantastic part - once Jacqui did get there, apologies and all, we were looked after just as if we were family! Every single detail was looked after - including a trip to the supermarket for us to stock up on essentials, arranging a rental car, giving us recommendations for local attractions, putting us in touch with the guy who 'manages' things on the beach... deck chairs, food, beers, everything! But perhaps the best part of their hospitality is how real it feels, and how attentive they are to their guests - Jacqui noticed that I had brought my own cafetiere and within half an hour, a coffee machine had been delivered to the room! I had a couple of sick days (what two week vacation is complete without a summer cold!) and Errol rolled out a whole rack of DVDs to keep us entertained in our time in. And that's just two little examples I can remember now.
It was an absolutely perfect holiday, so yes - despite our initial misgivings about full payment up front and missing pick ups - we will definitely stay at Shades when we return to Barbados, and can unhesitatingly recommend it to anyone.
