We just returned from an 8 night stay at the Plaza Resort Bonaire. After reading the reviews on your sight I was very nervous about our plans...the Plaza Resort and their staff completely removed those fears on our very first day! I am not sure what the reviewers expected from the tiny island of Bonaire but I was very pleased with the resort and the staff. The staff at the resort were friendly, warm and very helpful. There was ALWAYS someone at the front desk regardless of the time I went down, they were very punctual with their wakeup calls (not automated...they call once, then call back 10 minutes later just in case you fell back asleep). We stayed in the 2 bedroom/2 bath villas and was AMAZED at how large the rooms were. They were very clean and typical of what you find in the caribbean...I think 5 star in the islands is more like 3 star in the states...The room was a little 'tired' but more than acceptable for our family of 4. Staying in the villas we entered through a gate at the back of the property. In the evenings there was a security guard there as well. The grounds were very well lit, and I felt completely safe while at the resort. I felt very comfortable both at the resort and on the island...Bonaire has a wonderful air about it...the people were very hospitable. My daughter and I wandered around Kralendijk by ourselves and never felt in danger...I have been to other islands where I was nervous outside of the resorts...not the case in Bonaire! The airport is VERY close but there are so few flights in and out that it was no big deal at all- This is a very small island, do not expect huge malls or glitzy hotels. Expect instead a very relaxing vacation, diving some of the healthiest reefs I have ever seen, meeting some of the nicest locals who are very excited to tell you about all that their home has to offer, and a very heavy dutch influence. I would recommend Rum Runners for dinner (Quincy was the best waiter EVER), horseback riding with Miriam and Joyce at the Riding Academy Club (excellent way to see the mangroves and flamingos as well) and the diving staff at Toucan Diving. We had a marvelous time! My other recommendation to the people who wrote about how awful the Plaza Resort is...RELAX! You are in the Caribbean!! Yes, service is slow at the restaurants...who cares? You are on island time! Yes, the resort is a little weary...it is clean, safe and located on the best beach in Bonaire... When we go back, we will stay at the Plaza. It was the most relaxing week I have spent in a long time!

We had stayed at the Plaza several yrs ago and it was fine. This time we had booked the Sand Dollar, But when we found out the pool was going to be closed, we cancelled & booked the Plaza. It has slipped a bit. After our first night, we had to change rooms because the floor was flooded after our first shower. Obviously this was a pre-existing condition as there was missing molding and rot & mould on the wall.. THE MAINTENANCE IS SHODDY. BOTH ROOMS HAD LIGHT BULBS OUT, AND OUR BATH DOOR LOCK WAS TOTALLY BROKEN. THE SERVICE WAS OK, AND THE FRONT DESK WAS HELPFUL
. THE CASINO IS NOW CLOSED, MAKING THE CAVERNOUS LOBBY SEEM DESERTED. I DIDN'T LIKE THE CHARGE FOR INTERNET USE, AS ALMOST ALL QUALITY HOTELS/RESORTS HAVE IT FOR FREE. The food was good, especially the breakfasts, but $13- US for a burger is a bit much. the beach and pool are ok, with plenty of chairs but our big beef is having to share all the facilities with cruise ship tourists (they took over the pool several days!) and anybody who pays five (5) bucks a day for a wristband. The cocktails at the bar are very reasonable, and happy hour is great. The diving is always terrific. The resort was child friendly and made our four (4) yr old at home, offering small portions at the restaurants for children. On the weekends locals take over the pool-be prepared! We have a decent time but we would not go back because of the shared pool-beach thing.

“Accommodations were disappointing”

We were disappointed in the condition of our room (G101 - Grand Suite Ocean View) given the nightly rate.
The general condition of the room was "tired" to use a real estate term and certainly not as clean as one would like. The following items detracted from the enjoyment of our stay:

1) A live electrical outlet was hanging out of a wall by its wires.
2) The fluorescent fixture in the bathroom was partially dislodged from the ceiling.
3) Electrical switches for controlling lights in the bathroom were worn out. The switches would often have to be rocked back and forth to get the lights to go on.
4) On our arrival, table surfaces were not clean.
5) Ice bucket was dirty.
6) Balcony table was badly rusted.
7) Toilet seat lid was broken at its hinge.
8) Our room was located adjacent to the public bathrooms. The smell from the bathrooms was strong and unpleasant. Each time we left or returned to our room, we were met with the odor from these bathrooms. Fortunately, when we were actually in our room there was no odor problem.
9) We departed our room just before 6:00AM on Saturday (08 March) to catch our return flight. All of the exterior lighting around our building had already turned off making us feel our way down the outside stairs with our luggage as it was still very dark at this hour. We slowly worked our way to the parking lot where the lights were still on. We dropped our luggage in our vehicle then went to check out. On our return to the parking lot around 6:10AM, the parking lot lights went out leaving us once again in the dark. How difficult is it to maintain security lighting until dawn?
10) The main lobby area has some sort of biting insect infestation. Both myself and girlfriend finally figured out we were being chewed up after passing through the lobby area.
11) I'm not a gambler but the website touts a Casino.....which is closed. Something not mentioned on the website.

Other than our accommodations, we had a great trip and really enjoyed the island. Snorkeling was terrific! But, we will not be returning to the Plaza Resort.

“Great People”

Plaza Resort Bonaire

We expected a pretty low key vacation with lots of Diving. I had read many review and was slightly skeptical but found the facility and people to be great. Our room was clean and spacious. Upon arrival I became very sick. After two days in bed my wife contacted the front desk and "Vivian" orchestrated a visit to her personel physician, taxi service with "Papi" and golf shuttle service between the front desk and our room. Without her help we would have been in "real" trouble. We hope our next visit to the Plaza will find both my wife and myself in healthy condition to enjoy more the water sports.

My husband and I just returned from 9 nights at the Plaza. I was a little anxious as some of the reviews are not so great. The physical aspects of the Plaza are excellent. The rooms are large and clean. Nice cable TV and decks on all of the rooms. There was coffee (only instant) and tea making facilities and a small refrigerator. The beach and the garden were well maintained as was the front desk and restaurants. The front desk staff as noted in previous posts were cool and unfriendly. I saw only one person getting helped with luggage during the 9 days. Bell staff were completely absent! The restaurants were OK but very slow. I am not a picky person but I do like to stay at a hotel were the staff seem happy and pleased to see you. This was not the case at this hotel. That said ....if you love to snorkel it has an excellent beach to snorkel from with great entry to and from the water. We spent a large amount of time at the hotel right in front of "The Tipsy Seagull" restaurant. I would recommend renting a truck and taking bug spray.
