I stayed there for the past two weeks and was so disappointed. I wished I had made other arrangements, but that's what you get sometimes when you leave it to the travel agent. The hotel makes you walk and carry your laundry and go pick it up at the front desk when it's done. The internet is unusable, virtually nonexistent, most of the staff is friendly but some of them are trainees and not so friendly. The hotel has a casino which has been closed for months. There is a large air conditioned room with a billiard table near the front desk (which is not air conditioned and hot as blazes) but they said the room with the pool table was privately owned and not to be used by guests. The room itself in the JR suites wasn't that bad, half the television channels are snowy, and the TV is rather smallish, the breakfast buffet is quasi American style but not really worth the 15 dollars you have to pay for by the day for a coupon at the front desk or 18 US dollars at the banana tree as it's called. I travel internationally quite often and for a tropical resort I was just unimpressed and in fact irritated by the unfriendly maids, no bellhop to help with the bags (and it's a LONG walk to the front desk or parking lot).

Overall it's a motel in hotel's clothing. Except you can't park near your room at this motel.

Just depressing.

Management response from Boudewijn Scholts, director of sales & marketing

We regret that this guest felt disappointed by their stay with us, but appreciate the feedback as it can only help us to improve and/or clear up any misunderstandings.

Bonaire is a destination that attracts 70,000-75,000 tourists per year. The atmosphere is usually very relaxed and informal. Plaza Resort Bonaire is a four star property that caters to a variety of guests, primarily Americans (mostly divers) and Dutch (mostly rest and relaxation seekers). Because we are not a typical business hotel, there are some limitations to the business services we provide.

One of the services our front desk offers is guest laundry. As we do not allow our bellhops to enter guest rooms when the guest is not present, we do require that guests drop off and pick up their laundry at the front desk. For those visitors that have walking/mobility difficulties, we are of course more than happy to pick up and deliver laundry directly to their room.

Internet access is another service we do provide, although we have been experiencing some challenges with our technical provider for the past few weeks, including reduced connectivity. To compensate for these difficulties, we are offering our guests complimentary internet access until these problems are solved. If this particular guest paid for the use of the internet, we would gladly reimburse him/her.

Our Arawak room houses a billiard table and is also used as a sitting area for our hotel guests (where they can make use of the wireless internet and complimentary coffee station). The sign on the door of this room states that the use of the room is for our hotel guests only and not for visitors from outside the resort, so there must have been some misunderstanding as to the privacy concerning this room. Guests are more than welcome to make themselves comfortable here.

Our televisions are a minimum 32 inches, a normal hotel standard. Had this guest reported the poor quality to our front desk, we would have taken action straight away.

We also have bellhop staff available at the front desk who can assist with luggage. One phone call to the front desk is all it would take.

Finally, our trainee staff are mostly from Dutch origin, so there may be a ‘cultural difference’ in how the different nationalities approach each other. That being said, we have discussed these remarks with the staff to ensure our guests always feel welcomed.

The Plaza Resort is our favorite resort on our favorite Caribbean island. We come to Bonaire often to relax, dive, and enjoy great food with friendly people. The Plaza Resort rooms are very large, clean, and excellent value for the money. Toucan Diving is on site with diving for all skill levels. Their boats, and their staff are simply outstanding. Unlike many dive destination hotels, the Plaza is very family friendly.

I have traveled to the plaza 6 times over the years and have noticed over time that the rooms and grounds have been deteriorating. While I was there in the beginning of August about half of the rooms were closed because they are being renovated and I stayed in a room that had recently been refurbished. As always the rooms are huge, nothing has changed there. Most of the changes were made in the bathroom. The toilet is now in a small separate room and the Bidet has been replaced with a walk in shower. A large tub sits across the room from the shower. Over all I think that a very good job was done. Some of the other reviewers have reported problems with the staff and I cannot support this. We had a light bulb out in the room with the toilet and a phone call brought a maintenance man to change the bulb within 5 minutes. I was surprised at how fast they responded. Everyone was friendly and responded to requests without any problem. One of the charges in the resort was placed on our bill twice and this was removed without any question. The Refurbishing of the rooms may also account for way there are not always rooms available arriving on the red eye. The restaurants on Site are sufficient, but I would recommend that you get in to town to Donna and Geogios for good Italian food and to It Rains Fishes for fantastic Seafood. The whole point of traveling to Bonaire is to dive and at this the on site Dive shop, Toucan Divers; is second to none. The staff is amazingly friendly and they know all of the sites as readily as you know your house. The Boats are clean and offer a lot of shade; something you do not always find on a Bonaire Dive boat. Anything you need will be taken care of by the dive staff. Just don't leave your daughter alone with Sherman. In the end the resort is a place to stay while diving. It does not pretend to have the luxury pf the Pierre in Manhattan, but it is not a dump by any stretch of the imagination. The Plaza Resort should be considered a great dive operation surrounded by a good convenient place to stay.

Arrived in Bonaire on the Red Eye from Newark, with 9 divers, we all have been at the Plaza before. We had guaranteed early check in, or so I thought. Arrive at Plaza at 5:30 AM. Started the check in but were informed by a very flustered, and incompetent clerk that no rooms were available....Needless to say everyone in the group was outraged....My roommate and I were told to wait in a lounge and when housekeeping came in, at 8 AM they prepare a room ASAP.....Housekeeping is not staffed around the clock, just from 8 to 5. We had a scheduled checkout dive at noon and a boat dive at 2PM it was going to be a long day.... At 9AM we were told by the Check in clerk to go eat breakfast and come back....ate, returned...room not ready. Two others in our group had rooms, so we just sleep on the floor.....Eventually got a room 9 1/2 hours later.....As for the Resort itself...a lot of care needs to be given to grounds, trash, weeds, and overgrown vegetation everywhere. And bets of all an overpowering smell of raw sewage.....which is very sickening...and possibly a health hazard....and not appealing when eating breakfast.....As far as the pool, it was fine, except the pool bar and spa is not working, and filled with a foot of stagnant water. After 3 days of trying to get compensation for the check-in screw up the manager gave our group a free afternoon boat dive, a $25 value, not worth the major headache we had on check in.
Dive operations at Toucan Divers was excellent, Divemasters were very attentive, and just a joy to dive with.....
Bars and Restaurants were fine, but the wait for service was long, but that is the norm for Bonaire....Food good, but priced a little high. Overall trip was very good but all members of the group I was in WILL NEVER STAY AT THE PLAZA AGAIN.

UPDATED Management Response to “Disappointing” on Aug 18/09; rated 1/5

We feel badly that a misunderstanding caused these guests inconvenience upon check-in. After a night of travel, they were understandably tired. However, our now-expired “Free Red Eye Rooms” sale was clearly advertised as ‘Subject to Availability’ – meaning that early check-in would be offered free of charge to guests who arrived on red-eye flights, so long as there were any vacant rooms available to be had.

Unfortunately, we could not accommodate all of the rooms for this group for early check-in. We had a few vacant rooms that we offered straight away to as many members of this group as we could. All of the other guests in this group were checked in by our normal check-in time of 3pm except for one room, which was checked in at 4pm.

As we are always striving to improve our customer service, our staff did offer a free afternoon dive for the entire group to help compensate for the inconvenience they experienced. We felt this was more than fair given our clearly advertised restrictions for the sale and the fact that they were not paying for the rooms that were unavailable when they wished to check in.

Regarding the smell of sewage, Plaza Resort Bonaire, along with every other house and hotel on Bonaire, uses a septic tank because there is currently no sewage system on the island. Unfortunately an essential pump out of our sewage system broke and we rushed to get a replacement made. During the interim, however, we did regrettably deal with some unpleasant odors.

The pump has since arrived and the system is functioning normally again, without odor.

This was my first time in Bonaire and stayed here for a week. Has conveniences like a on site restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast place is convenient before going diving at Toucan Diving, which is also on site.

Beach bar on site was the most hopping spot I've found outside of the downtown area. Beautiful sunset scene if you stick around after happy hour.

Junior suites were large. My door to the balcony was nailed shut, while my friends had full access to theirs. Some rooms had flat screen TV. In room safes varied in each room. Bathroom was spacious with shower and tub and double sinks. Bed was comfortable. Air conditioning cooled the room perfectly.

Toilet is in separate section so as not to tie up access to shower or sink for your room mate.
Has pool, hot tub and beach for the non divers.

I didn't expect a high end hotel when I stayed here so ultimately I was not disappointed.

Would recommend if you want convenience and not adventurous enough to leave the resort for and after diving.
