My boyfriend and I visited this resort on 17 June for 2 weeks in 2011 and after booking a holiday to Egypt this year, I thought I would take another look at what we are missing from this hotel we stayed in during our time of Cuba.
It was a truly excellent holiday and enjoyed every aspect. Upon arrival, the staff at reception could be a little offish but they were busy.
Our room was a good size and air con was great (apart from when the boyfriend left it on all night and I woke up freezing). However, we were on the 2nd floor and we did have a load of ants by the door, outside on the balcony. Only 1 or 2 came in the room and they didn’t cause us too much trouble. Nothing else dodgy in the room though
One cleaner did walk in while my boyfriend and I were having a long lie in... it was a little awkward but she came back later & made some lovley things out of my dresses and towels.
Entertainment throughout the day was brilliant and staff were really friendly. Also good entertainment during the evening. The food was good, there was plenty of variety in the buffet which we ate in most nights as we enjoyed the good service and that the food was made in front of you to how you wanted it. We only tried the allocate restaurants once each, but were not fancy eaters, the buffet was nice enough.
The pool area was great and lots of activities, water polo, darts, ping pong, games, bingo, quizzes, shooting, football, aqua aerobics, salsa lessons. Just did not get bored. Beach was fantastic. Clean and beautiful, plenty of space and all inclusive food & drinks from the beach hut. The water was that clear that if you pinch some bread from the hit and tear bits off, fish would swim around u in the sea. An advantage to this was also using the free snorkelling facilities, pedal boat, banana boat and canoe.
However, my boyfriend and I did turn right down the beach one evening and got very attacked by mosquitoes, it was our fault for not wearing insect repellent. The resort had a truck and an aeroplane spreading bug repellent over and around the resort every day, twice a day.
Trips great, but don’t wear expensive clothes/jewellery in Havana, the Cubans will ask you for your items. Food also included in trips. Catamaran was great to a beautiful island.
Take Toilet roll ladies everywhere you go, Cuba seems to have a shortage of toilet roll and do not supply unless you pay a contribution, so unless you’re prepared to pay to spend a penny, take a few sheets on your trips.
& Tip, Tip, Tip... this will make people more friendly with you and it appears to be sort of expected from you. after all, this is a poor country and they get paid pennies!
I was however, took straight to hospital on arrival in England due to massive red swollen itchy blotches (like golf balls) which appeared all over my body. They were unbearably itchy on the 9 hour flight home. The Hospital advised me that this could be due to a bug in the water or I think it could have been an allergic reaction to the mosquito bites. Either way, blood tests confirmed that I would survive and with a drip of anti histamines, I was on my way. So Sol Palamaras, if you are reading this, could you advise me what this could have been so I can avoid it on future holidays?
This certainly did not ruin my holiday as only appeared on last day. Was an excellent experience and would recommend to anyone, it also looks like much more has improved since our visit...Hope you have as good of time as we did!!!
In regards to the rooms, try a sea facing room. Our room was garden veiw, and although not terrible...

We appreciate that you have published, and shared, on the Trip Advisor, your opinions about your stay at Sol Palmeras Hotel.
We regret that, after you spent stupendous holidays among us in our hotel, you had to go to the hospital.
You were staying in our hotel on June, month in which mosquitos proliferate, that is why we fumigate twice a day.
In my opinion, as I have seen in other cases, I believe that you had an allergy due to the sting of the mosquitos, maybe influenced by the heat or for the sun.
We hope that, if you went on holidays to another Caribbean country, this did not happen again to you.
On the other hand, we thank you for all your comments of our hotel and the services we offer.
Hoping you visit our hotel again. Receive best regards.
