“Beautiful Beach. The vacation is what you make of it!”
I stayed at Arenas Doradas March 16th-23rd, 2012. I'm not a picky person, I do not expect the world, and if people are paying low costs to go somewhere, then you probably shouldn't expect everything to be perfect. I made the most of my trip, and ensured I had fun. You don't go on vacation to pick everything apart! This was my 2nd trip to Cuba, and my first trip to this particular resort.
The hotel was very clean, the grounds are well kept, the pool area is very nice and the beach is stunning. We were always able to find a spot in the shade on the beach, even mid-day. No need to get up at the break of dawn to claim a spot! The pool area, on the other hand, was much busier and it was usually difficult to find a spot to sit. If you like being by the pool more than the beach, then I suggest you do go there early in the day to claim your seats.
We did bring our own beach towels, and I'm glad we did. There were laundry issues, so we had to use our own towels for the first day. It wasn't a big deal for us, but if you didn't have one with you, you might be slightly cranky. Overall, bringing the comforts from home were what made everything fine with me. If you love condiments, and you can't live without certain things, just bring them with you! We brought sauces, peanut butter, jam, chips, candy, etc. Last year I did not bring any of this small things that make such a big difference, and was really happy I did this time.
The staff are always friendly, and helpful. Even if they aren't smiling 24/7, they're still very nice people. They work extremely long hours and I'm sure they deal with quite a bit! The buffet didn't have a very large selection but the bread is delicious, the omelet grill in the morning is great, the pasta grill at night is very good & the beach grill is just what you would expect. Who can hate BBQ chicken, pork, ribs, fish, etc??
The rooms are very basic. The beds are firm, but I didn't have any problems sleeping. We were on the ground floor, so yes there are little bugs here and there but nothing to be worried about. Our room (the 200 building) was SO close to the pool and beach. Everything is relatively close together, so you won't have problems finding your way around.
We went on 2 excursions and I would recommend them as well. The Havana tour is very interesting and a great way to see the culture. It's a long day, so bring comfy shoes! The catamaran is always a blast anywhere you go, so I have nothing but good things to say about it. I have done the jeep safari in past years, and would highly recommend it if you're traveling with men. All jeeps are standard, so make sure you know how to drive them before you book!
Overall, I don't know if I would rush back to this resort, but I don't regret it either. It was a very nice time and we all enjoyed ourselves. I hope this review was helpful. Please don't be scared by other reviews! I was, and it turned out just fine. Just go and enjoy yourself! :)
Our room was close to the pool and the shows at night. I slept through everything just fine. If you...
